Chapter 6 - The Zenith Gala

The grand ballroom of the Zenith Tower sparkled under thousands of crystal chandeliers, filled with Chicago’s elite: politicians, real estate moguls, corporate executives, and society socialites draped in diamonds and designer gowns.

Standing near the VIP reception area, Grant Whitaker adjusted his black bow tie, a triumphant smirk plastered across his handsome face. Tonight was supposed to be his crowning achievement—his formal ascension to Vice President of Whitaker Enterprises, celebrated in the very skyscraper his family’s fortune had built.

Beside him, Brielle clung to his arm, wearing a glittering emerald dress that cost more than a small car.

“Have you seen the guest list?” Brielle whispered excitedly. “Even the mayor is sitting at the head table.”

“My father ensured everything is flawless,” Grant replied smoothly, taking a sip of champagne. “By midnight, Whitaker Enterprises will secure the municipal renewal contract, and our family will be untouchable.”

Little did they know, the foundation beneath their feet was about to crumble.

Hidden in a private VIP suite overlooking the grand ballroom, I stood before a floor-to-ceiling mirror, wearing a stunning, elegant emerald-green silk gown that hugged my five-month pregnant belly with grace and dignity. The transformation from the exhausted, broke woman standing in the discount supermarket aisle just days ago was absolute.

Vincent walked up behind me, dressed in a flawless midnight-blue tuxedo. He reached out, gently placing a delicate diamond-and-emerald necklace around my neck, his fingers brushing against my skin with a tender, electric touch.

“You take my breath away, Tessa,” Vincent murmured softly, his dark eyes meeting mine in the mirror reflection.

“I feel like I’m walking into a battlefield,” I admitted, resting my hand over his.

“You aren't walking in alone,” Vincent promised, turning me around to face him. “I’ll be right beside you every single second. Are you ready?”

“More than ready,” I said, a fierce, steady determination settling into my soul.

Downstairs, the house lights dimmed, and the applause swelled as Arthur Whitaker stepped up to the central podium on the grand stage, beaming with arrogant pride.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur’s booming voice echoed through the massive sound system. “Tonight marks a monumental milestone for Whitaker Enterprises. As we unveil our next phase of city development, dedicated to progress, safety, and uncompromising quality—”

Suddenly, the massive digital projection screens behind him flickered violently. The polished promotional slides of skyscrapers vanished, replaced instantly by a glaring, bold headline in crimson letters:

**EXPOSED: THE TRUE COST OF WHITAKER ENTERPRISES.**

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Whispers rippled across the crowded tables as the screen began displaying scanned financial ledgers, offshore wire transfer receipts to the Cayman Islands, and signed memos proving the systematic reduction of structural steel reinforcement in the Zenith Tower itself.

Arthur Whitaker froze mid-sentence, his face turning an alarming shade of purple as he stared up at the screens displaying his darkest corporate crimes in 4K resolution.

At the back of the ballroom, Grant dropped his champagne flute. The glass shattered on the marble floor with a sharp, echoing crash.

“Turn that off!” Grant roared, shoving past panicked guests toward the stage. “Hackers! This is a malicious cyber attack! Security, shut down the AV feed!”

Before security could move, the heavy mahogany double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung open with a slow, dramatic thud.

All conversations died instantly. Every head turned toward the entrance.

Walking side by side into the ballroom were Vincent Rossi and me.
