Chapter 8 - The Weight Lifted

The glowing skyline of Chicago swept past our window as Vincent’s armored sedan carried us away from the Zenith Tower and back toward the safety of the Lake Michigan estate.
Inside the quiet, warm cabin of the car, I let out a long, shuddering breath. The adrenaline that had sustained me through the confrontation slowly drained away, leaving a profound, overwhelming sense of peace in its wake.
Vincent reached over, taking my hand in his strong, steady grip. He brought my knuckles to his lips, pressing a gentle, lingering kiss against my skin.
“It’s over, Tessa,” Vincent murmured, his voice rich with warmth and pride. “Your father’s name has been cleared. The Whitakers will never hurt you—or anyone else—ever again.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder, closing my eyes as the tension melted from my muscles. “I still can’t believe it’s real. For six years, I felt like I was living under a dark cloud, constantly wondering if I was crazy for believing my dad’s death wasn't an accident.”
“You were never crazy,” Vincent said softly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and pulling me close against his chest. “You were just fighting alone. But you never have to fight alone again.”
When we arrived back at the estate, Mrs. Gable greeted us at the door with warm smiles and hot tea, sensing the monumental victory we had just secured. But instead of going straight to my suite, Vincent led me out onto the grand stone terrace overlooking the dark, churning waters of Lake Michigan under a clear, star-lit sky.
The lake breeze was crisp, but Vincent’s wool coat wrapped snugly around my shoulders kept the chill at bay.
He stood behind me, his arms encircling my waist, his hands resting gently over the gentle swell of my pregnant belly. I leaned back against his solid, reassuring frame, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart against my spine.
“There’s one more thing,” Vincent whispered near my ear, his voice carrying a quiet vulnerability I had never heard from him before.
I turned slightly in his arms, looking up at him in the dim starlight. “What is it?”
Vincent reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. My breath hitched in my throat. He flipped the lid open, revealing a breathtaking, flawless vintage diamond ring flanked by two deep-green emeralds—a ring that somehow captured both the elegance of my past and the fierce, unyielding protection of my present.
“I know everything has moved fast, Tessa,” Vincent said, his dark eyes searching mine with profound emotion. “And I know you’ve spent years picking up the pieces of a life broken by men who didn't deserve you. But from the moment I saw you standing by your father’s grave six years ago... and every single day since then... you have been the center of my world.”
Tears welled in my eyes, completely different from the tears of humiliation I had shed in the supermarket just a week ago. These were tears of pure joy, love, and absolute liberation.
“Vincent...” I choked out, a bright smile breaking across my face.
“Will you marry me, Tessa?” he asked softly, his voice thick with hope. “Let me spend the rest of my life protecting you, loving you, and raising this child as my own.”
“Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. “Yes, Vincent. A million times, yes.”

He slid the stunning emerald-and-diamond ring onto my finger, then pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our past, our present, and our unbreakable future.
