Chapter 25 - The Viper Unmasked

Julian Vance looked impeccably tailored despite the damp, subterranean chill of the limestone bunker, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the harsh fluorescent light of the server room. A thin, cold smile curled the corners of his lips as he kept the muzzle of his pistol locked dead-center on my chest, while Marcus and his tactical team were pinned down in the hallway by two heavy machine-gun emplacements around the corner.

"Julian," Vincent said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, rumbling growl that sounded less like a man and more like an apex predator cornered in its den. "I should have broken your neck the day I found those discrepancies in the Swiss subsidiary accounts."

"Ah, but you didn't, did you, Vincent?" Julian chuckled softly, shifting his weight with casual arrogance as he kept his eyes locked on me. "You were too busy playing the benevolent billionaire, raising a family, believing that your little empire was built on solid rock. You never understood that the corporate world isn't about legacy or love—it's about leverage. And right now, I have all of it."

Julian glanced down at the master console, where my portable drive was still actively downloading the complete database of the syndicate's global assets. "Turn off the transfer, Clara. Step away from the console, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you and your little baby live to see the sunset. Though I must admit, it was terribly inconvenient of you to survive Richard’s little supermarket stunt. The boy had no imagination; he always lacked the stomach for real cruelty."

I stared at Julian, feeling the cold, hard weight of the Glock 19 tucked inside my tactical vest. My heart was pounding, my palms slick with cold sweat, but the blinding terror I had felt months ago in that supermarket aisle was entirely gone, replaced by a searing, crystalline clarity. Julian thought I was still the broke, desperate girl who could be intimidated by a gun and a sneer.

"You think you’ve won because you have a gun, Julian?" I asked, my voice steady, ringing out clearly through the hum of the server racks.

Julian’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes narrowing behind his silver-rimmed glasses. "You're standing in front of a loaded barrel, my dear. Save the melodrama."

"Look at the master console, Julian," I said, tilting my chin toward the screen with a razor-sharp smile.

Julian frowned, flicking his gaze toward the monitor for a split second. That was all the opening Vincent needed.

With blinding, terrifying speed, Vincent moved. He didn't lunge forward; instead, he kicked the heavy steel base of the server rack directly into Julian’s shins with bone-shattering force. Julian yelled out in pain, his knee buckling outward, and his pistol discharged wildly, sending a bullet harmlessly into the concrete ceiling above us.

Before Julian could recover his balance, Vincent was on him. He grabbed Julian by the collar of his expensive Italian suit, slammed him violently against the metal edge of the desk, and pressed the cold barrel of his own assault rifle directly underneath Julian’s chin.

"The download is complete, Julian," Vincent whispered, his grey eyes burning with an incandescent fury that promised eternity in hell. "And your offshore accounts have just been transferred directly to the United States Department of Justice, along with every wiretap recording, bribe ledger, and assassination order you've signed over the last decade. You’re done."
