Chapter 29 - The Phoenix Rises

I stared at the glowing red text on the dark monitor, my breath catching in my throat as the chilling words seemed to mock the absolute peace we had fought so desperately to build over the past month. Before I could reach for the encrypted terminal phone to summon Marcus, the screen flickered again, dissolving into a live video feed originating from a private, windowless interrogation room located deep within a federal facility five hundred miles away.

On the screen sat Julian Vance.

He wasn't wearing an orange jumpsuit, nor was he chained to a bolted floor table as federal protocol dictated for maximum-security prisoners. Instead, Julian was seated comfortably in an ergonomic leather chair, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with his sleeves rolled up, casually sipping a cup of black coffee while staring directly into the lens of the hidden security camera as if he knew I was watching.

A slow, chilling smile spread across Julian’s face. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished metal table, his silver-rimmed glasses gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"I told you, Clara," Julian’s voice echoed softly through the tiny desktop speakers of the subterranean study, sounding as crisp and clear as if he were standing right beside me in the room. "You and Vincent are brilliant children playing in a sandbox you don't understand. You thought arresting me would stop the machine? Julian Vance was never the head of the syndicate, my dear. I was merely the accountant. And an accountant doesn't build empires—he simply records whose blood is on the ledger."

My hands hovered over the keyboard, my mind racing at a million miles an hour as I analyzed the routing protocols. "Who is backing you, Julian?" I demanded, my voice ringing out with fierce, controlled fury into the empty study. "The federal government seized every offshore account, every shell company, every asset you owned!"

"The government seizes what we *allow* them to seize, Clara," Julian laughed, a dry, mocking sound that sent ice water straight through my veins. "True power doesn't reside in bank accounts in Zurich or Cayman shell companies. It resides in foundational debt—the ancient, invisible chains that bind governments, corporations, and billionaires alike to the people who actually print the rules. And forty-eight hours from now, when Phoenix Protocol executes, every single debt, mortgage, trust, and stock option held by the Sterling family will revert back to the true owners."

Julian raised his coffee cup in a mocking toast toward the camera lens. "Enjoy your little lake house while you can, Clara. Tell Vincent I said hello."

The video feed blinked out instantly, replaced by the same ominous, ticking countdown timer: *47:58:12*. Forty-seven hours until the Sterling empire—and everything we had fought for—was completely dismantled from the roots up.

I didn't panic. The fear that had paralyzed me months ago in the supermarket was gone, replaced by a cold, hardened rage. I grabbed the satellite phone, punched in Marcus’s direct line, and hit send.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dropping into a tone that brooked no argument. "Wake Vincent up. Tell him Julian Vance didn't act alone, and our war has just begun."
