Chapter 5 - The Corporate Trap

The morning sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting a brilliant, golden sheen across the frozen shoreline. I woke up feeling more rested than I had in months, wrapped in the quiet safety of the Rossi estate.

Downstairs in Vincent’s private study, a high-tech war room had been hastily assembled. Massive digital screens displayed corporate flowcharts, financial audits, bank wire transfers, and structural engineering schematics pulled from my father’s flash drive.

Vincent stood before the main monitor, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, reviewing data alongside his chief legal counsel, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn Vance.

When I walked into the study, dressed in a tailored blazer and slacks Mrs. Gable had thoughtfully provided, Vincent looked up immediately.

“Morning, Tessa. Did you sleep well?” he asked, his voice softening as he crossed the room to greet me.

“Better than I have in years,” I answered honestly, stepping up to the digital screens. “What are we looking at?”

“We’re looking at Arthur Whitaker’s Achilles' heel,” Evelyn Vance answered crisply, adjusting her glasses. “These financial ledgers prove that Whitaker Enterprises diverted over forty million dollars in municipal safety subsidies into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, while cutting reinforcement steel budgets by thirty-five percent on their flagship downtown project, the Zenith Tower.”

I stared at the glowing numbers, a cold anger replacing the lingering shock. “The Zenith Tower is currently hosting the annual Chicago Business Gala this coming Friday,” I noted aloud. “Arthur Whitaker is the keynote speaker. Grant is slated to take over as Vice President of Operations.”

A slow, dangerous smile curved across Vincent’s lips.

“Then I suppose it’s time for a family reunion,” Vincent said quietly. “We aren't just going to hand these documents over to the police, Evelyn. Federal regulators move too slowly, and the Whitakers have bought off half the district attorney’s office.”

“What’s the play, then?” Evelyn asked, tapping her stylus against her tablet.

“We drop the bomb live,” Vincent said, his eyes locking onto mine. “In front of every investor, politician, and media outlet in Chicago. We let Arthur Whitaker realize his empire is crumbling in real-time, on national television.”

“And Grant?” I asked, my voice steady.

“Grant will finally learn what happens when you mistake kindness for weakness,” Vincent replied coldly.

Over the next three days, the Rossi estate became a hive of intense, meticulous preparation. Evelyn coordinated with federal whistleblowers and independent investigative journalists, while Vincent’s security network secured encrypted broadcast channels that could not be jammed or intercepted by Whitaker Enterprises.

I spent hours reviewing my father’s engineering notes, ensuring every calculation, every blueprint discrepancy, and every memo was cataloged flawlessly. Working alongside Vincent, I discovered a side of the infamous Chicago boss that few ever saw: brilliant, patient, deeply protective, and fiercely loyal.
