Chapter 12 - The Midnight Intruder

The shrill ring of the secure landline echoed through the cavernous study, cutting through the emotional stillness between Arthur and Emily like a razor. Arthur frowned, his hand trembling as he reached out to lift the heavy black receiver. Only three people outside the immediate household had the direct number to this phone: the head of estate security, the family lawyer, and the local precinct chief.
"Speak," Arthur commanded, his voice regaining a fraction of its old, authoritative bark.
"Mr. Sterling, we have an emergency at the main security gate," a breathless voice crackled through the static. It was Vance, the lead night watchman. "An unauthorized vehicle just rammed the outer perimeter sensor. It’s a late-model sedan, heavily damaged on the driver's side. The driver refused to stop for the automated intercom."
Emily’s posture instantly stiffened, all traces of youthful softness vanishing from her face, replaced by the sharp, protective instincts she had inherited from a childhood spent surviving the Sterling family wars. "Who is it, Vance?" she asked, stepping closer to the desk so the receiver could pick up her voice. "Is it paparazzi? Or... creditors?"
"Worse, Miss Emily," Vance replied, his tone grim. "The driver crashed into the snowbank just inside the gate. When my team approached with the floodlights, the person stumbled out. It’s Richard. And he doesn't look well. He’s screaming your name, Mr. Sterling, and he’s bleeding."
The name hung in the air like poison gas. Richard. The disgraced son, the architect of a dozen family betrayals, vanished for the better part of seven years, presumed to be hiding somewhere in the seedier parts of Boston or Montreal.
"Lock down the inner courtyard," Arthur ordered, his chest tightening with a sudden, suffocating panic. "Do not let him near the main house. Call the state police immediately."
"Wait," Emily interrupted, placing her hand firmly over the receiver, stopping Arthur from hanging up. Her eyes were wide, not with fear, but with a cold, calculating curiosity. "If we call the cops now, he gets arrested on our property, makes a scene, and the press gets ahold of it by morning. They’ll dig up every skeleton in this estate's closet just as we’re starting fresh."
"Emily, your uncle is unstable," Arthur argued, his voice laced with genuine dread. "He nearly destroyed your mother, he tried to ruin you, and God knows what kind of trouble he’s brought to our doorstep tonight. We cannot shelter him."
"I’m not saying we shelter him," Emily said, her gaze hardening into something unbreakable. "I’m saying we go down to the gate and face him on our own terms. Let him see what Westport looks like now. Let him see that he has absolutely no power left here."

Minutes later, a heavy-duty estate utility vehicle crunched across the freshly fallen snow, cutting through the darkness of the private driveway. Daniel drove, his jaw clenched tight, gripping the steering wheel as if he were preparing for physical combat. In the passenger seat, Arthur sat wrapped in a thick wool coat, staring blankly ahead. In the back sat Emily, calm, composed, her emerald dress hidden beneath a heavy black winter cloak, her hands resting quietly in her lap.
When the vehicle’s high beams illuminated the front gates, the grim reality of Richard Sterling came into full view.
