Chapter 24 - The Federal Safehouse

By 3:00 AM, the cliffside estate was a secure federal crime scene. Forensics teams in white Tyvek suits swarmed the halls, collecting digital evidence, dusting for prints, and cataloging the encrypted communication devices left behind by the captured mercenaries. Arthur, still shaken but fiercely resilient, had been convinced by the medical team to rest in the secure guest wing, while Lily had finally fallen back asleep in Emily’s arms.

Emily sat across from Special Agent Vance at the mahogany dining table, which was now covered in encrypted laptops, satellite phones, and thick manila dossiers stamped *CLASSIFIED*.

"Those men weren't just standard corporate thugs, Mrs. Sterling," Vance said, sliding a photograph across the table. It showed the man with the scarred jaw whom Emily had fought in the foyer. "His name is Viktor Vance—no relation to me—a former Spetsnaz operative turned high-end corporate cleaner. He works exclusively for a shadowy consortium known only as *The Syndicate*. They’ve been using Richard’s shell companies to filter billions of dollars in illicit capital through European banks."

Emily stared at the photograph, her expression hardened like flint. "Richard told me he was just playing high-stakes corporate poker. He had no idea who he was really dealing with, did he?"

"Oh, Richard knew," Vance replied dryly, taking a sip of black coffee. "He thought he was using them to bail out Sterling Holdings from bankruptcy. What he didn't realize was that once you dance with the devil, you don't get to step off the floor when the music stops. They were using his family estate as a digital drop point for their global servers."

Vance leaned in closer, lowering his voice. "Which brings us to you, Emily. The Zurich server alert that went off on your phone tonight? That wasn't just a warning. It was a digital dead-man’s switch. The moment those mercenaries breached your gate, an automated transfer protocol initiated. Half a billion dollars in hidden assets from Richard’s offshore accounts just vanished."

Emily’s eyes widened. "Vanished where? Who has it?"

"We don't know yet," Vance said grimly. "The trail leads to an unlisted IP address in Geneva, but the corporate entity holding the account is registered under a ghost name: *Aethelgard Holdings*. Does that name mean anything to you?"

Emily shook her head slowly, a cold chill running down her spine. "Never heard of it. But whoever they are, they just inherited a massive target on their back."

May you like

"Precisely," Vance said, standing up and buttoning his coat. "Which is why you and your daughter cannot stay here. The Syndicate knows you have the decryption keys embedded in your personal biometric profile. You are their primary target now. We’re moving you to a secure federal safehouse in downtown Boston by dawn."
