Chapter 28 - The Ghost of the Past Returns

Within ten minutes of signing the covenant, Emily’s secure terminal pinged with a priority encrypted file attachment. It contained a comprehensive dossier complete with facial recognition logs, flight manifests, and a live satellite tracking beacon. The target: a man operating under the alias *Marcus Thorne*, a high-level broker for the international syndicate that had backed Richard’s reckless financial expansion.

According to Victoria’s intel, Thorne wasn't hiding in some distant offshore tax haven; he was currently operating out of a heavily guarded private penthouse suite located in downtown Boston, less than two miles away from the federal safehouse where Emily was currently staying.

Emily didn't wait to consult Special Agent Vance. She knew that if she involved the Bureau through official channels, red tape, jurisdictional disputes, and bureaucratic delays would give Thorne enough time to scrub his servers and vanish into the global underworld once more. This was her fight.

She walked softly into the adjoining bedroom. Lily was still sound asleep, breathing softly, her face peaceful under the moonlight streaming through the window. Emily pulled the tartan blanket up to her daughter’s chin, kissed her forehead, and whispered, "I’ll be back before you wake up, my sweet girl."

Dressing in dark tactical gear she had requisitioned from the safehouse armory, Emily slipped out the back service door of the brownstone into the freezing Boston night. Her breath plumed in the crisp air as she slid into the driver’s seat of an unmarked federal sedan that Victoria’s network had conveniently left parked in the alley with the keys in the ignition.

The drive through the snowy, neon-lit streets of Boston took less than eight minutes. The destination was the *Aether Tower*, a towering glass-and-steel skyscraper overlooking the harbor—a monument to modern corporate wealth built on the very land that the Sterling family had historically dominated.

Emily parked in the subterranean garage, swiped a high-security access card provided by Victoria’s digital file, and stepped onto the private executive elevator. The digital floor indicator climbed rapidly: 40… 45… 50… 55.

The elevator bell chimed softly, and the heavy doors slid open directly into the ultra-luxurious penthouse suite.

The room was bathed in the cool blue glow of dozens of high-definition computer monitors displaying rolling lines of financial data, cryptocurrency wallets, and live satellite feeds of the cliffside estate. Standing by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a crystal glass of amber bourbon, was a tall, silver-haired man in an impeccably tailored Italian suit.

He didn't turn around as the elevator doors chimed. He simply swirled the liquor in his glass, his voice smooth and laced with quiet menace. "I was wondering when you would finally show up, Mrs. Sterling. I must admit, you’re much harder to kill than your late husband."
