Chapter 7 - Breaking the Patriarch

The living room of Marcus’s suburban townhouse smelled of stale takeout and nervous sweat. Arthur sat in an armchair that was far too small for him, staring blankly at the floral wallpaper, while Eleanor paced back and forth across the narrow strip of carpet, wringing her hands until her skin was raw.

The front door opened, and Marcus walked in, looking like a man who had just returned from a funeral. He pulled the printed document from his jacket and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of his father.

“What’s this?” Arthur demanded, his voice thick with stubborn defiance. “Did he call the police? Are they throwing us out tonight?”

“No,” Marcus said, collapsing onto the sofa and rubbing his face with both hands. “He gave us a deal. Read it, Dad. And before you start screaming, remember that you have nowhere else to sleep tomorrow night.”

Arthur picked up the paper, his thick, graying eyebrows drawing together as his eyes scanned the lines. As he reached the second point, his face turned a mottled, furious purple. He slammed the paper back down onto the table.

“An apology?!” Arthur roared, surging to his feet with surprising speed for a man his age. “To that little girl?! He expects me—Arthur Sterling, founder of Sterling Construction, pillar of this community—to bow down and apologize to a child who doesn't even carry my blood? I’d rather burn that house to the ground!”

“Go ahead, Dad! Burn it!” Marcus shouted back, finally snapping after a lifetime of walking on eggshells around his father. “Burn a house that doesn't belong to you! See what happens when you commit arson on property owned by a minor under federal protection! You’ll spend your remaining years in a federal penitentiary!”

Eleanor burst into fresh, hysterical tears, sinking onto the arm of the sofa. “Arthur, please... stop it! Just stop! We have nowhere to go! All our friends in Westport... what are we going to tell them? That we got evicted by our own grandson-in-law and a ten-year-old child because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself?!”

Arthur stood frozen, his chest heaving. The fire in his eyes flickered, beaten down by the cold, hard walls of reality. For thirty years, he had been the undisputed king of his domain. He had believed that his wealth, his dominance, and his name shielded him from consequences.

Now, looking at his weeping wife and his exasperated son, he realized the throne was gone. The crown had slipped from his head, and there was no one left to pick it up.

“He... he wants me to humble myself,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in thirty years.

“Yes, Dad,” Marcus said quietly, his tone softening out of a strange, pitiful exhaustion. “He wants you to be a human being. For once in your life.”
