Chapter 22 - Shadows in the Foyer

The sudden drop in temperature was immediate as the estate’s automated geothermal climate control shut down. In the amber glow of the fireplace, Arthur gripped the armrests of his wingback chair, his knuckles turning stark white. "What is the meaning of this? The backup generator should have kicked in within three seconds."

"It’s not a mechanical failure, Arthur," Emily whispered, her voice dropping to a low, razor-sharp register. She moved swiftly to the side of the sofa where Lily was stirring, her small eyes fluttering open in confusion. "Lily, sweetie, wake up. I need you to stay right here behind this sofa and don't make a single sound. Do you understand?"

"Mommy? Why is it so dark?" Lily whimpered, her hands clutching the edges of her tartan blanket, the trauma of the Christmas dinner rushing back into her young mind.

"Trust me," Emily pressed a gentle, urgent kiss to her daughter’s forehead before rising into a tactical crouch. She pulled the heavy iron fireplace poker from its stand, testing its weight. It was crude, but in close quarters, it was a lethal lever.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the marble-tiled grand foyer. They weren't hiding; they wanted to be heard. They wanted psychological dominance. *Thud. Thud. Thud.* Combat boots marching with military precision over the ancestral floors that had once held generations of arrogant Sterlings in absolute luxury.

"Emily Sterling," a distorted, electronically modulated voice called out from the darkness of the hallway, bouncing off the high vaulted ceilings. "We know you have the Zurich drive. Hand it over, and no one in this room has to suffer the same fate as Richard."

Arthur’s breath hitched. "Richard? What do they want with Richard? Who is out there?"

"Sit tight, Arthur," Emily hissed, stepping away from the fireplace to position herself in the shadowed archway connecting the parlor to the main hallway. Her heart drummed a frantic rhythm against her ribs, but her mind remained ice-cold, forged in the fires of the legal warfare she had waged over the past year. She wasn't the terrified, gaslit daughter-in-law she used to be. She was the sole legal guardian of Sterling estate, and nobody was going to touch her family.

Two massive figures silhouetted in tactical gear stepped past the grand staircase. Night-vision goggles cast an eerie green glow over their heavy ballistic vests. The lead operative raised a suppressed submachine gun, sweeping the barrel toward the parlor entrance.

Emily didn't wait for them to spot her. Using the absolute darkness to her advantage, she hurled a heavy brass decorative vase across the room. It shattered loudly against the far wall of the foyer, drawing the operatives' attention away from the parlor archway just long enough for her to strike.
