Chapter 29 - Checkmate in the Penthouse

Emily didn't flinch. She stepped out of the elevator, her boots clicking sharply against the polished marble floor of the penthouse suite. Her hand rested casually inside her jacket pocket, her fingers wrapped around the grip of a compact, federal-issue tactical sidearm she had secured before leaving the safehouse.

"You picked the wrong family to cross, Marcus," Emily said, her voice echoing in the cavernous, glass-walled room.

Marcus Thorne finally turned around slowly, a sardonic, confident smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He looked remarkably calm for a man whose criminal enterprise was currently being dismantled by a coalition of federal investigators and vengeful Zurich heirs. He took a slow sip of his bourbon before setting the glass down on a glass-topped coffee table.

"Cross the family?" Thorne chuckled, his voice deep and smooth as silk. "My dear Mrs. Sterling, I *made* this family. Richard was nothing more than an ambitious, gambling-addicted gambler who came crawling to my syndicate begging for liquidity to save his skin from bankruptcy. I didn't destroy the Sterlings; I merely accelerated a collapse that was already written into their arrogant DNA."

"And the home invasion? Sending Viktor Vance to my house while my daughter was sleeping?" Emily stepped closer, her eyes locked onto his, every muscle in her body coiled like a spring.

Thorne’s smile faltered slightly, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing his face. "Viktor Vance? What are you talking about? My operatives were scheduled to intercept the digital drive at midnight, yes—but we don't do messy night-raid massacres on children. That’s not my style."

Emily stopped dead in her tracks. A cold realization washed over her. If Thorne didn't order the hit on her house, and Victoria’s family didn't order it either... then who was the third party operating in the shadows?

Before Thorne could speak another word, the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse shattered inward with a deafening explosion of flying shards and high-velocity gunfire.

*Bang! Bang! Bang!*

Bullets chewed through the air, embedding themselves into the mahogany desk and shattering computer monitors in a shower of sparks and electrical smoke. Emily threw herself to the floor, sliding behind a heavy leather sofa as glass rained down around her like deadly diamonds.

Through the smoke and swirling snow blowing in from the shattered harbor-view windows, three heavily armed figures in matte-black tactical gear dropped rappelling ropes from the rooftop, swinging directly into the penthouse suite like predatory spiders.

Thorne wasn't as lucky. Before he could dive for cover, a silenced round caught him square in the chest. He gasped, his eyes wide with shock, before collapsing backward onto the Persian rug, his crystal glass shattering as it slipped from his lifeless fingers.

May you like

Emily’s heart pounded wildly against her ribs. She drew her sidearm from her jacket, clicked off the safety, and pressed her back firmly against the leather sofa, waiting in the absolute darkness of the smoke-filled room as heavy combat boots crunched closer and closer across the broken glass.
