Chapter 11 - The Secret Trust

The federal trial was set for four months later. In the interim, the court granted me full, unchallengeable sole legal and physical custody of Leo, along with a permanent lifetime restraining order against Beatrice and Celeste.
With Greg’s assistance, the federal bankruptcy court began liquidating Celeste’s assets to pay restitution.
One afternoon, while helping Greg pack up his belongings from the lakeside estate he had once shared with Celeste, we discovered a hidden floor safe beneath the master closet floorboards.
"I didn't even know this safe existed," Greg said, staring at the steel combination dial.
"Can you open it?" I asked.
Greg fetched his tool kit and spent forty-five minutes working on the lock mechanisms using combination sequences he found in Celeste's old journals. With a heavy clack, the heavy steel door swung open.
Inside the safe were three leather-bound journals, two passports, and a stack of safety deposit box keys stamped with the logo of a private bank in Zurich, Switzerland.
Greg pulled out the top journal, opening it to a marked page dated three years prior—long before I had even gotten pregnant.
He read the entry aloud, his voice dropping to a horrified whisper:
"'Mother met with Dr. Whitmore today in Vancouver. The medical offshore trust is fully set up. If Mara ever gets pregnant, Mother promises we can use the trust paperwork to claim the child under the surrogate registry without her knowledge. We just have to keep funding the account.'"
My heart stopped beating. "What... what did you just read?"
Greg handed me the journal. I read the handwritten words in my mother's elegant script.
This hadn't started when I got pregnant.
Three years ago, when I first mentioned to my mother that I was considering using a donor to have a child as a single military officer, Beatrice and Celeste had already formulated the plan. They had set up a fake surrogate registration shell company in Canada, intending to register my baby as Celeste's biological child from the moment of conception!
"They didn't just lie about the IVF money, Mara," Greg realized, clutching his hair in shock. "The $42,500 you transferred... they used it to pay off Canadian legal brokers to create a fraudulent surrogacy contract naming Celeste as the mother and you as the surrogate!"

A cold realization washed over me. If that paper had been filed in Canada, Celeste could have legally claimed she owned my child the second he was born!
"Arthur needs to see this right now," I said, my hands trembling as I held the journals. "This isn't just attempted fraud. This is international child trafficking."
