Chapter 9 - The Web Begins to Unravel

Armed with Greg's forensic accounting files, Arthur and I delivered the evidence directly to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Washington. Lead Prosecutor Assistant U.S. Attorney Evelyn Carter spent three hours interviewing Greg and reviewing the mountain of evidence.
By Friday morning, the tide had turned completely.
Prosecutor Carter officially issued federal arrest warrants for Beatrice Bennett, Celeste Bennett, and Evelyn Reed (the corrupt notary public).
However, before the FBI could execute the warrants at Beatrice’s sprawling waterfront estate, Beatrice attempted one last, desperate counter-strike.
At 1500 hours, I was at home with Leo when my phone pinged with a notification from a local news app. The headline read:
"MILITARY OFFICER ACCUSED OF CHILD NEGLECT AND FINANCIAL EXTORTION IN DRAMATIC FAMILY FEUD"
I clicked the link, my blood boiling. Beatrice had used her public relations contacts to leak a fabricated story to Seattle's largest local news station. The article featured a tearful video interview of Celeste sitting on a velvet sofa, weeping into a handkerchief.
"My sister, Mara, promised me her baby because she couldn't care for him while active in the military," Celeste lied to the camera, her voice quavering dramatically. "We paid for all her medical care! Now she's using her military authority and armed threats to keep my nephew away from us after stealing over forty thousand dollars from my business!"
The comment section under the video was already exploding with thousands of angry reactions, calling me a "horrible mother" and demanding the military dishonorably discharge me.
Within an hour, my phone was ringing off the hook with calls from news reporters, angry strangers, and base public affairs.
"Don't panic, Mara," Arthur told me over the phone. "This is a classic media smear campaign designed to poison the jury pool before trial."
"I'm not panicking, Arthur," I said, looking at the screen with cold determination. "I'm going to set the record straight. Call a press conference."
"A press conference?" Arthur hesitated. "Mara, the military has strict guidelines about officers speaking to the press."
"Colonel Vance already gave me clearance to defend my character," I replied. "We hold the press conference tomorrow at 1000 hours right in front of the Federal Courthouse. And we bring the receipts."
The next morning, dozens of reporters and camera crews gathered outside the courthouse steps. News 5—the station that had aired Celeste's fake interview—was right in the front row.
I stepped up to the podium wearing my crisp military uniform, holding Leo securely in a baby chest-carrier against my heart. Arthur stood on my right; Greg stood on my left.
"Good morning," I began, my voice clear and ringing through the microphones. "Yesterday, a video was released accusing me of abandoning my child and stealing money from my family. Today, I am here to present the truth."
I turned to a large display board Arthur had set up behind us.
"This is the official bank audit showing that the $42,500 I transferred was stolen by my sister through a fake medical shell company," I said, pointing to the enlarged bank statements.
The reporters gasped, cameras flashing frantically.
"This is the official FBI forensic document analysis proving my signature was forged on custody papers filed before my son was even born," I continued.
"And this," I said, gesturing to Greg, "is Greg Bennett—Celeste’s husband—who has turned over full evidence of five years of tax fraud, money laundering, and illegal adoption forging conducted by my mother, Beatrice Bennett."
Greg stepped up to the microphone. "Everything my wife said in that video was a lie. Mara is an honorable mother and a decorated soldier. My wife and mother-in-law are criminal predators."
The reporters erupted into a frenzy of questions, shouting over one another:
"Captain Bennett! Is the FBI arresting them?!"
"Greg! Did you turn them in to the IRS?!"
Before I could answer, three black unmarked SUVs pulled up to the curb right behind the news crews. Six FBI special agents stepped out, wearing blue windbreakers with "FBI" blazoned across the back.
Lead Agent Thomas stepped up to the press podium, leaning into the microphones.
"I have a public announcement," Agent Thomas declared into the cameras. "Ten minutes ago, federal agents executed arrest warrants at the residence of Beatrice Bennett. Beatrice Bennett and Celeste Bennett have been taken into federal custody without bail, charged with federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit child trafficking, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice."
The press pool erupted. The camera from News 5 zoomed in on the FBI agent, the reporter’s face turning completely pale as she realized she had been used to broadcast a criminal cover-up.

I looked down at Leo, who was staring up at me with big blue eyes. I kissed his forehead softly.
The smear campaign was dead. The real battle had just begun.
