Chapter 12 - The Canadian Connection

Within twenty-four hours of our discovery, Arthur contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canadian Border Services Agency.

A joint international task force raided the Vancouver office of "Dr. Nathan Whitmore"—whose real name was uncovered as Julian Vance (no relation to Arthur), a disbarred Canadian medical practitioner who specialized in illegal cross-border document forgery for high-net-worth clients.

Julian Vance was arrested at his Vancouver penthouse, where Canadian authorities seized hard drives containing hundreds of forged birth applications, including a fully executed, fake Canadian surrogacy contract bearing my forged signature, naming Celeste as the designated parent of baby Leo.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Evelyn Carter immediately added international human trafficking and forgery charges to the federal indictment against Beatrice and Celeste.

The legal net was officially inescapable.

Two weeks later, Celeste’s high-priced attorney, Richard Montgomery, reached out to Arthur with an urgent request.

Celeste was breaking. Facing a potential 30-year sentence in federal prison under the new international trafficking charges, she was offering to turn state's evidence against her own mother in exchange for a plea deal.

I sat in Arthur's office as Prosecutor Carter joined us via secure video call.

"Captain Bennett," Prosecutor Carter said from her office in D.C. "Celeste's attorney has proposed a plea bargain. Celeste will plead guilty to wire fraud and conspiracy to commit forgery. She will serve eight years in federal prison and testify fully against Beatrice. In exchange, we drop the international trafficking charges against her."

Arthur looked at me. "It guarantees Beatrice goes away for fifteen to twenty-five years without the risk of a jury trial verdict. What do you want to do, Mara?"

I thought about all the years I had defended Celeste, all the money I had given her, all the love I had wasted on a sister who viewed me as nothing more than an incubator for her own selfish desires.

"Does the plea deal require Celeste to forfeit all financial claims to every piece of property, trust, and asset owned by the family?" I asked.

"Yes," Prosecutor Carter confirmed. "Every cent will be seized and placed into a court-ordered victim restitution fund for you and Leo."

"And does it require her to make a full, public confession in open court?"

May you like

"It does."

I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of a lifetime of manipulation finally lift from my chest. "Accept the deal."
