Chapter 4 - The Stalker in the Shadows

I tore into my driveway, the tires screeching against the wet pavement. Unlocking the front door with shaking hands, I rushed upstairs to the nursery where my trusted friend and fellow officer, Lieutenant Sarah Jenkins, was babysitting Leo.

Sarah was sitting in the rocking chair, Leo fast asleep in her arms. She looked up, startled by my frantic entrance.

"Mara! What’s wrong?"

"The window," I breathed, rushing over to the nursery window that overlooked the backyard.

The glass was intact, but drawn on the outside pane in thick, red lipstick was a crude circle with an 'X' through it. Pinned under the screen frame was a single printed photograph—taken through the glass just hours ago—showing Sarah holding Leo while I was at base.

Sarah gasped, clutching Leo tighter. "Oh my god, Mara... someone was right outside while you were gone!"

"They're watching the house," I said, my blood running cold.

Within thirty minutes, two local police cruisers pulled up outside. Officer Miller took notes while dusting the window frame for fingerprints.

"It's classic intimidation, Captain," Miller said, looking over the photos. "They want to make you feel unsafe in your own home so you'll break down and hand over the baby."

"Can you arrest them?" I demanded.

"Without definitive video proof showing who left the mark, we can't make an arrest yet. But we'll step up patrols in your neighborhood."

After the officers left, Arthur Vance arrived at the house. He looked over the perimeter and immediately made a call.

"We need to move off the defensive," Arthur declared, pacing my living room. "Beatrice and Celeste are getting desperate. The bank has frozen Celeste's accounts following the wire fraud report, and her husband, Greg, just received a subpoena from the grand jury."

"Greg?" I asked. "Celeste's husband? Does he even know what they've done?"

Arthur paused. "That's what we need to find out. Greg has been quiet throughout this entire ordeal. He's a corporate accountant at a major tech firm in Seattle. If he knew about the $42,500 fraud, he's an accomplice. If he didn't... he's their weakest link."

"I need to talk to Greg," I said.

"It's risky," Arthur warned. "If Beatrice catches wind—"

"Beatrice doesn't run my life anymore," I interrupted. "Greg deserves to know his wife used his home address to set up a fake business to steal money from me."

That evening, leaving Leo under Sarah's vigilant guard and a newly installed security system, I drove to a quiet coffee shop midway between Seattle and Tacoma. I had texted Greg directly from a new burner phone: Meet me alone. It's about Celeste's IVF money and the legal nightmare coming your way.

Greg arrived twenty minutes later. He looked exhausted, his shirt wrinkled, dark circles under his eyes. He sat down across from me, refusing to look me in the eye.

"Mara... I don't want to get involved in family drama," Greg muttered nervously.

"This isn't drama, Greg. This is federal wire fraud," I said, sliding copies of the bank transfers and the fake "Westbridge Fertility" invoices across the table. "Did you know Celeste took $42,500 from me under the guise of fake fertility treatments?"

Greg took the papers. As he read the invoices, his face went pale, his jaw dropping. "What... what is this? Celeste told me this money was a gift from your trust fund to pay off her business loan!"

"There is no trust fund, Greg. I worked 60-hour weeks in uniform to save that money," I said firmly. "She lied to you. She lied to me. And now she and my mother forged my signature to steal my baby because she promised you a child she couldn't have!"

Greg put his head in his hands, trembling. "Oh god... oh god. She told me... she told me you were giving up the baby voluntarily because you couldn't handle single motherhood in the military. She said we were adopting him legally!"

I leaned forward, my voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. "They lied to you, Greg. You are on the verge of being indicted as a co-conspirator in a federal fraud case because your name is listed on Apex Consulting's joint tax filings."

Greg looked up, terrified. "I didn't know! I swear to God, Mara, I didn't know!"

"Then help me stop them," I pleaded. "Tell me what Beatrice and Celeste are planning next."

Greg swallowed hard, glancing over his shoulder before leaning in close. "Beatrice... she hired a private investigator named Vance Miller—no relation to your lawyer. They're planning to stage an intervention at your house this Friday with a hired private security team. They're going to use the forged custody papers to physically take Leo while filing an emergency ex-parte motion with a corrupt county judge they paid off."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "They're going to kidnap my son."

"Yes," Greg whispered. "This Friday. At midnight."
