Chapter 6 - The Midnight Raid

"Arthur! We have to go now!" I screamed, sprinting down the courthouse steps toward my SUV.
"I'm calling 911 and Joint Base Security!" Arthur shouted, pulling out his phone as he ran beside me. "Get to your house, Mara, but do not go inside alone!"
The drive across town was a nightmare blur of flashing red lights and roaring engines. My heart slammed against my ribs with every turn of the wheel. Sarah was at my home with Leo, completely unaware that Beatrice and Celeste had accelerated their plan.
I hit the gas, pushing the SUV to eighty miles an hour on the freeway. "Sarah, answer the phone... come on, answer..." I prayed aloud, listening to the monotonous ringing.
Finally, the line picked up. "Mara?" Sarah's voice sounded hushed, frantic.
"Sarah! Lock all the doors! Get Leo into the master bedroom closet and lock the door! They're coming right now!"
A loud, shattering crunch echoed through the phone line from Sarah’s end.
"Mara! Someone just smashed the back sliding glass door!" Sarah shrieked. "They're inside!"
"Sarah!" I screamed.
"I have Leo! I'm running upstairs—" Sarah’s voice was cut off by a heavy man’s voice yelling in the background: "Where's the kid? Find the kid!"
Then the line dropped completely.
"No, no, no!" I roared, throwing the phone onto the passenger seat and slamming my foot onto the accelerator.
Five minutes later, I slammed my SUV into my driveway. The front door of my home was hanging off its hinges, the frame splintered.
I didn't wait for the police. Maternal instinct, raw and violent, took complete control of my body. Reaching under the driver's seat, I pulled out my service sidearm—a Sig Sauer P320—and cleared the chamber as I sprinted up the porch steps.
Inside, the living room was ransacked. Furniture was overturned, lamps shattered.
From upstairs, I heard Celeste’s sharp, frantic voice: "Break the door down! He's in there!"
I tore up the stairs three steps at a time. In the hallway outside the master bedroom stood two large men in dark hoodies, one of them swinging a heavy crowbar against the reinforced bedroom door. Standing right behind them was Beatrice, wearing a black trench coat, her face twisted in manic desperation.
"Stop right there!" I yelled, bringing my weapon up, sight aligned directly on the chest of the man with the crowbar.
The two men froze, their hands flying into the air at the sight of an armed military officer with blood in her eyes.
"Mara!" Beatrice gasped, stepping back, her aristocratic veneer completely gone. "Are you insane?! Put that gun down!"
"Get away from that door," I commanded, my voice cold, steady, and deadly. "Get on the ground! Both of you! On your stomachs now!"
The two hired thugs immediately dropped to the floor, hands interlaced behind their heads. They weren't paid enough to take a bullet from a trained soldier.
Celeste stepped out from the guest room, carrying a heavy duffel bag meant for stolen infant supplies. When she saw me holding the gun, her eyes widened in fury rather than fear.
"You won't shoot me, Mara!" Celeste screamed, stepping toward me. "Give me my baby! You don't deserve him! You were always the favorite, always the strong one! I deserve something good in my life!"
"He is NOT your baby!" I roared. "He is my son! Step back!"
At that exact moment, the sirens shrieked in the driveway outside. Red and blue lights flashed through the hallway windows.
Downstairs, heavy boots pounded into the foyer. "Police! Drop your weapons!"
Four armed officers surged up the stairs, rifles raised, taking in the scene instantly.
"Lower your weapon, Captain, we have the room," the lead officer called out softly.
I slowly lowered my gun, keeping my safety engaged, as the officers slammed the two thugs and a screaming Celeste against the wall, slapping steel handcuffs onto their wrists.
Beatrice backed away toward the linen closet, her hands shaking violently. "Officers, you don't understand! This is a family matter! I am his grandmother!"
Officer Miller stepped forward, pulling Beatrice's arms behind her back. "Beatrice Bennett, you are under arrest for attempted burglary, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and breaking and entering."
"You can't arrest me!" Beatrice shrieked as the cold steel locked around her wrists. "Do you know who I am?!"
I walked past them without giving either woman another glance. I unlocked the master bedroom closet door.
Inside, Sarah was sitting on the floor, holding a baseball bat in one hand and clutching Leo tightly against her chest with the other. Leo was crying softly.

I dropped to my knees, taking my son into my arms, burying my face in his soft blanket as tears finally streamed down my face.
"Mommy's here, baby," I whispered, kissing his forehead. "Mommy's got you."
