Chapter 17 - A New Horizon

Following my promotion to Major, the Army offered me a prestigious three-year assignment as a Senior Tactical Advisor at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas—a warm, beautiful environment far away from the dark memories of Washington state.

Arthur Vance, who had recently retired from active JAG duty to open a private family advocacy practice, met me at the airport on the day of my departure.

"So, Major Bennett," Arthur smiled, handing me a small gift box. "Texas awaits."

"I couldn't have made it there without you, Arthur," I said sincerely.

I opened the gift box. Inside was a custom engraved silver baby rattle for Leo, inscribed with the words: To Leo — Protected by Strength, Loved by Courage.

"Keep in touch, Mara," Arthur said warmly. "And if you ever need a fierce lawyer in Texas... you know my number."

"I think my legal trouble days are officially over," I laughed, hugging him goodbye.

I boarded the plane carrying Leo in my arms. As the aircraft lifted off the runway, soaring high above the clouds into the bright blue sky, I looked out the window at the Pacific Northwest disappearing below us.

I had entered that hospital room a year ago as a vulnerable single mother, targeted by the very people who were supposed to protect me.

I was leaving as a Major, a homeowner, a debt-free survivor, and a triumphant mother who had defended her child against impossible odds.
