Chapter 20 - Triumphant and Free

On a warm Saturday morning in May, I took Leo to the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

The roses were in full bloom, casting a vibrant tapestry of crimson, gold, and white across the rolling green hills.

Leo, now three and a half years old, ran ahead along the paved stone path, his small hand holding a bright yellow pinwheel that spun rapidly in the breeze.

"Look, Mommy! Look how fast it spins!" he shouted, turning back to me with a brilliant, wide smile.

"I see it, baby!" I laughed, walking alongside him, feeling the warm sun bathing my face.

I sat down on a stone bench overlooking a tranquil koi pond while Leo watched the colorful fish swimming beneath the crystal-clear water.

My phone chimed softly in my purse. It was an official email from the Department of the Army.

I opened it. It was my formal notification of tenure and assignment confirmation for the rank of Lieutenant Colonel select. My career was flourishing, my financial security was permanent, and my home was filled with safety and love.

I looked down at my hands—the hands that had held my baby in a hospital room three years ago while my mother threatened to destroy everything I owned.

They had failed to break me.

They had tried to use my vulnerability, my service, and my love against me. But in their arrogance, they had forgotten that a mother’s love is not a weakness to be exploited—it is an unbreakable force of nature.

Leo ran back over to the bench, climbing up beside me and resting his small head against my arm.

"Mommy?" he asked, looking up at me with his big, clear blue eyes.

"Yes, my sweet boy?"

"Are we happy?"

I pulled him into my lap, wrapping my arms around him, smelling the sweet scent of sunshine and baby shampoo in his hair. I looked out over the blooming garden, feeling the absolute, unbreakable peace of our lives.

"Yes, Leo," I whispered, kissing his forehead as he giggled softly in my arms. "We are safe, we are loved, and we are finally, truly free."
