Chapter 14 - THE RECKONING AT THE TABLE

Thomas shrank back into his chair, looking less like a patriarch and more like a cornered animal facing an executioner. The rest of the extended family—cousins, uncles, and in-laws who had spent their entire lives living off the fat of the Sterling trust—sat paralyzed, unable to process the sudden, catastrophic collapse of their world.

Evelyn walked slowly toward the dining table, her cane tapping rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Nobody dared to move. The federal investigators stepped aside respectfully as she approached the head of the table—the very seat Thomas had occupied with such smug arrogance only an hour before.

“Nice turkey,” Evelyn remarked dryly, glancing down at the roasted bird that Lydia had so carefully carved earlier. She looked up, her piercing gaze locking onto Lydia. “You must be Lydia.”

Lydia didn't cower. She straightened her posture, meeting the older woman’s intense gaze with quiet, unflinching dignity. “Yes. I’m Lydia.”

Evelyn’s eyes flicked down to Lydia’s arms—strong, bare, and perfectly healed, resting naturally at her sides. A flicker of something resembling deep, fierce respect crossed Evelyn’s weathered features.

“I heard about what happened last year,” Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “I heard about the oven. I heard about the silence. I heard about the way these miserable, ungrateful men sat around this table while your skin was literally cooking off your bones, and not a single one of them had the decency to say thank you.”

Thomas whimpered, burying his face in his shaking hands.

Evelyn turned her attention back to the table, leaning slightly on her cane. “For twenty-five years, I watched from the outside as this family built an empire on lies, theft, and the systematic abuse of the people who kept their houses clean and their stomachs full. Tommy thought he could lock me away, steal my inheritance, and play the king of the castle. But empires built on cruelty always crumble from the inside out.”

She turned her head to look directly at Grant. “And you. Grant Sterling. You spent years being your father’s shadow, taking your frustrations out on the woman who loved you. But you woke up.” Evelyn’s eyes softened just a fraction. “You looked at her arms. You saw the truth. And because you finally had the courage to see, you saved what little soul this family had left.”

Grant swallowed hard, nodding slowly. “Aunt Evelyn... I’m sorry. For all of it.”

“Save your apologies for the woman who earned them,” Evelyn replied firmly. She turned back to the room at large. “Now, listen to me very carefully. As of midnight tonight, every single account, vehicle, and property deed belonging to Thomas and Elena Sterling is frozen. You have until sunrise to pack two bags each and get off my property. The bailiffs outside will ensure you don't take a single piece of silver that doesn't belong to you.”

“You can’t do this!” Elena screamed, lunging forward, but one of the federal agents stepped firmly into her path, blocking her with impassive authority.

“Try me,” Evelyn said coldly.
