Chapter 25 - THE INTERROGATION IN THE BASEMENT

Thirty minutes later, the gunfire had stopped, replaced by the quiet hum of the smart-home ventilation clearing out the last traces of the gas. Two of the intruders were zip-tied and secured in the subterranean security lounge, while the third had managed to escape back into the freezing night.

Grant stood over the primary captive, a scarred mercenary with a cold, unyielding stare. The man refused to speak, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the polished concrete floor.

Lydia walked down the concrete steps into the basement, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor. She didn't look like a victim; she looked like an executioner holding the keys to the kingdom. She stopped in front of the bound mercenary, looking down at him with an eerie, calm detachment.

"Tell Thomas Sterling something for me," Lydia said softly, her voice barely above a whisper, yet carrying a chilling weight that made even the hardened mercenary flinch.

The man sneered. "Sterling sends his regards, lady. He said your scars look much better in person."

Before Grant could lunge forward to snap the man's neck, Lydia raised a single hand, stopping him. She leaned down slowly until her face was inches from the mercenary's ear.

"Tell Thomas," Lydia whispered, her eyes flashing with ice, "that the fire he trapped me in didn't destroy me. It only forged me into steel. And next time he decides to send his lapdogs, make sure he comes himself. Because I am done hiding in the shadows."

The mercenary swallowed hard, the sheer aura of absolute authority radiating from Lydia finally breaking his stoic resolve. "He... he’s at the old waterfront warehouse on Pier 42. He’s leaving the country on a private cargo ship by dawn."

Grant straightened up, pulling his satellite phone from his pocket. He dialed a rapid three-digit code, connecting directly to the federal task force he had bribed and bartered with for months. "This is Sterling. Pier 42. Full tactical lockdown. I want every federal marshal on the eastern seaboard breathing down that pier in twenty minutes."

He hung up, turned to Lydia, and pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair. "It ends tonight, my love."
