Chapter 23 - THE SIEGE AT DUSK

The shrill alarm pierced the air, jolting everyone into immediate action. Grant moved with terrifying speed, slamming his hand onto the master control pad by the hallway wall to silence the noise, while simultaneously locking down the smart-home security protocols. The floor-to-ceiling smart glass windows instantly began shifting, heavy steel ballistic shutters descending from the ceiling with a dull, heavy thud, sealing off the dining room from the outside world.

"Everyone down!" Grant commanded, his voice brooking no argument.

Lydia didn't panic. The adrenaline surging through her veins felt eerily familiar—it was the same hyper-focus she had possessed during the darkest days of her marriage, the feeling of absolute survival mode. But this time, she wasn't alone. She had Grant, and she had a family forged in loyalty rather than obligation.

"Evelyn, get under the heavy mahogany sideboard," Lydia instructed firmly, pulling the trembling woman away from the now-shielded windows. Evelyn was hyperventilating, sobbing uncontrollably, completely paralyzed by her own cowardice.

Grant was already pulling a heavy, biometric-locked titanium case from behind a false panel in the study nook. He flipped the latches, revealing a sleek tactical satellite phone and a customized firearm. He punched a rapid sequence into the satellite phone, his eyes darting toward the security monitors that flickered to life on the main wall.

Four thermal signatures were moving across the snow-covered lawn, their heavy boots crunching against the frost. They weren't wearing local winter gear; they wore tactical urban camo, their faces obscured by black balaclavas.

"Professional," Grant muttered under his breath, his expression stone-cold. "They’re not thugs. They’re corporate fixers."

"They’re here for me," Lydia said quietly, stepping up beside him. She looked down at her own forearms, where the faint, silvery traces of old burn scars peeked out from her cuffs. "Thomas wants to finish what he started. He wants to strip away everything I’ve built, piece by piece, until I’m kneeling in front of him again."

Grant grabbed her by the shoulders, turning her to face him. His eyes burned with fierce, absolute devotion. "Listen to me, Lydia. Thomas Sterling lost all power over you the day you walked out of that hellhole. No one is touching you. Not him, not his hired animals."

A deafening *BANG* echoed through the front of the house as something massive struck the reinforced oak front door, trying to splinter the locks.
