Chapter 29 - THE ASHES OF THE PAST

Dawn broke over the Boston harbor, painting the sky in breathtaking strokes of amber, violet, and gold. The freezing winter wind had died down, leaving behind a crisp, silent morning blanketed in fresh, untouched snow.
Lydia stood on the grand balcony of their estate, holding a warm ceramic mug of coffee between her hands. Down below, the federal transport vehicles had finally cleared out, taking Thomas Sterling to a maximum-security federal penitentiary where he would never see the light of day again. Evelyn had been placed on a mandatory flight back into exile, her manipulation finally yielding the lonely, miserable fate she had always deserved.
The house was finally, truly safe.
Grant stepped out onto the balcony behind her, wearing a simple cashmere sweater. He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of vanilla and winter air.
"He's gone, Lydia," Grant whispered softly, his voice thick with emotion. "For good. No more shadows. No more fear."
Lydia turned around in his arms, looking up into the eyes of the man who had torn down an empire just to keep her safe. She set her coffee mug down on the stone railing and slowly lifted her arms, resting her hands against the back of his neck.
"I know," she smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. For the first time in her life, the ghosts of the past no longer haunted her. The scars on her arms weren't symbols of torture anymore; they were the battle scars of a survivor who had conquered hell and emerged as a queen.
Grant leaned down and pressed a long, tender kiss to her lips. When he pulled back, his eyes shimmered with unshed tears. "Thank you for saving me, Lydia. Because the day I saw what that oven had done to your arms... I realized that I was the one living in the dark, and you were the light that finally woke me up."

"We saved each other," Lydia whispered, resting her head against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.
