Chapter 21 - THE SHADOW IN THE FOYER

The sudden intrusion of the chilling wind sweeping through the heavy oak doors sent a sharp shiver down Lydia’s spine. The festive music playing softly in the background suddenly felt hollow, swallowed entirely by the heavy, suffocating silence that now blanketed the dining room. Grant was out of his chair before the heavy footsteps in the foyer had even finished echoing against the marble floor. His jaw was clenched tight, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek as he stepped in front of Lydia instinctively, his broad shoulders shielding her from whatever nightmare had just crossed their threshold.

"Stay here," Grant muttered low and fierce, his eyes locked on the dark silhouette standing near the coat rack.

Lydia’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The horrific memories of the past—of Thomas Sterling, of the endless abuse, of the fourteen-hour shifts where she was treated like a household appliance rather than a human being—flashed behind her eyelids. But she refused to cower. She stood up slowly, her fingers brushing against the cool crystal of her champagne flute. She would not let fear dictate her life anymore.

As Grant rounded the corner into the dim hallway, the silhouette stepped forward into the amber glow of the chandelier. A collective gasp escaped the lips of everyone at the table. It wasn’t Thomas. It was someone far more unexpected—a woman draped in a mud-splattered designer coat, her hair disheveled, trembling violently with cold and exhaustion.

"Evelyn?" Grant breathed out, his voice laced with absolute disbelief and a sudden surge of cold fury.

Evelyn Sterling—Thomas’s estranged, manipulative sister who had vanished to Europe three years ago right before the collapse of the Sterling empire—stumbled forward, collapsing against the mahogany console table. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a frantic, desperate terror.

"Grant... please," Evelyn choked out, her voice cracking as she clutched at her chest. "You have to help me. He’s coming back. Thomas... Thomas is out of federal custody."

The name dropped into the room like a live grenade. The festive warmth of Thanksgiving evaporated instantly, replaced by the chilling realization that the ghost they thought they had buried forever had just risen from the dead. Lydia stepped past Grant, her chin held high, looking down at the shivering wreck of a woman who had once mocked the scars on her arms. The cycle wasn’t broken. The war had only just begun.
