Chapter 26 - THE RIDE INTO THE STORM

The midnight wind howled across the frozen harbor, whipping the black waters of the bay into violent, foaming peaks. The black armored SUV tore down the desolate industrial road toward Pier 42, its high-beam headlights slicing through the swirling winter snow.
Inside the vehicle, the atmosphere was thick with a tense, razor-sharp focus. Grant sat beside Lydia, his hand tightly holding hers. The silver scars on her wrists were partially visible beneath her coat sleeves—a permanent reminder of the horrors she had endured, but also of the unbreakable resilience that had brought her to this exact moment.
"You don't have to come with me, Lydia," Grant said quietly, his thumb gently tracing the back of her hand. "Let the marshals handle him."
"No," Lydia replied, staring straight ahead through the windshield at the looming silhouettes of massive cargo cranes against the bruised, starry sky. "Thomas spent years trying to make me invisible. He made me cook in silence, bleed in secret, and disappear into the background of his pathetic life. If he goes down, I want him to look me in the eye and see the woman he failed to destroy."
Grant didn't argue. He leaned over and kissed her forehead tenderly. "Then we finish this together."
The SUV slowed to a crawl as they approached the rusted iron gates of Pier 42. Federal marshal vehicles were already positioned in a tactical semicircle, their red and blue emergency lights flashing silently against the falling snow. Agent Miller, head of the federal task force, jogged over to their vehicle, pulling open the door with a grim expression.
"Mr. Sterling, Mrs. Sterling," Miller greeted them briskly. "The perimeter is locked down. Warehouse C is secure on three sides. But Thomas knows we're here. He’s barricaded inside the main office with a hostage."
Grant’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Who?"
"Evelyn," Miller sighed. "She must have slipped out of your house and tried to warn him to buy her way back into his good graces. It backfired. He’s using her as human shield."

Lydia unbuckled her seatbelt and pushed the door open, stepping out into the biting winter air. "Let me talk to him."
