Chapter 21 - The Mid-Air Phantom

The sudden silence inside the cabin of the private jet was deafening. The twin engines, which had been humming with a powerful, reassuring rhythm as we taxied down the private airstrip outside Zurich, died instantly. The cabin lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged into a dim, amber emergency glow.

Anton shot out of his leather seat, his face draining of all color. "Stay back, Elena," he ordered, his voice sharp and laced with a sudden, frantic panic. He lunged toward the cockpit door, pounding his fists against the reinforced titanium panel. "Captain! What the hell is going on? Why did we abort? Open the door!"

No answer came from the cockpit. Only a heavy, suffocating stillness pressed down on us.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My fingers were still clenched around the heavy cardstock note, the chilling words burning into my retinas: *“Checkmate was just the opening move. Enjoy the flight home... while it lasts.”*

"Anton, the ribbon," I managed to choke out, my voice trembling as I pointed a shaking finger at the silver tray on the central table. "Look at the black silk ribbon. It’s... it’s her signature. But how? She’s locked away! Her entire inner circle was dismantled in Zurich! How could a message be here, inside a private, sweep-cleared aircraft?"

Before Anton could answer, the heavy cockpit door clicked and slowly swung open on its own.

There was no pilot in the left seat. No co-pilot in the right. The captain's chair was completely empty, illuminated only by the flashing green light of a digital tablet mounted on the dashboard. Attached to the tablet was a pair of high-end aviation headphones, playing a continuous, looping audio file.

Anton stepped cautiously into the cockpit, his jaw clenched, his fists balled so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white. He reached out and tapped the screen of the tablet.

A chilling, synthesized voice filled the cramped space, echoing off the instrument panels.

*"Did you really think a few frozen bank accounts and a handful of disgraced executives could erase a dynasty, my dear children?"*

It wasn't a recording of a live voice; it was a cold, calculated text-to-speech algorithm, designed to strip away all human emotion yet carry an unmistakable, venomous intent.

*"A true queen never keeps all her pieces on the main board. While you were busy celebrating your hollow victory in Zurich, the real machinery was already moving in the background. Your security team? Checked, cleared, and thoroughly neutralized—not with violence, but with a simple, untraceable digital override that locked every exterior hatch from the outside. Look out the window, Anton. Look at who is waiting for you on the tarmac."*

With trembling legs, I staggered toward the cabin window and pressed my face against the double-paned reinforced glass.

Outside, under the brilliant, merciless blue sky of the Swiss morning, a sleek black Mercedes-Maybach had pulled up right beside the wing of our jet. The tinted rear window rolled down smoothly.

A woman sat inside, draped in a structured cashmere coat, wearing oversized designer sunglasses that hid her eyes. But I didn't need to see her eyes to know who it was. The posture, the razor-sharp jawline, the quiet, terrifying aura of absolute control—it was Beatrice. Or rather, a ghost we thought we had buried forever. She raised a gloved hand, lifted a crystal glass of champagne in a mocking toast toward our stranded aircraft, and slowly smiled.

"No," Anton whispered, staring out the window beside me, his voice cracking with disbelief. "She was supposed to be finished. We checked every single loophole."

May you like

"She’s not finished, Anton," I said, a cold, hard resolve suddenly replacing the panic in my chest. I turned away from the window, grabbed the unopened bottle of vintage champagne from the silver tray, and smashed the neck against the metal edge of the cabin table. "She wants a war? We'll give her a war at 30,000 feet."
