Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Castle Crumbles

Three days later, the security footage from the bridal prep hallway was pulled, reviewed, and entered into the official police file.

While the audio was faint due to background noise, high-definition lip-reading and corroborating witness statements from a passing florist confirmed every single word of my testimony. Doña Carmela had indeed planned to incapacitate me at the reception to humiliate me and drive a permanent wedge between Anton and me.

Faced with mounting evidence of premeditated poisoning and assault, the District Attorney’s office placed Doña Carmela under formal house arrest at her private estate once she was discharged from the hospital, pending a full criminal trial.

The media frenzy was cataclysmic. Front-page headlines across every major newspaper and gossip site screamed:"HIGH SOCIETY HORROR: DOÑA CARMELA’S WEDDING DAY PLOT BACKFIRES AS SHE POISONS HERSELF!"

The stock value of Sterling Real Estate dropped twelve percent in forty-eight hours as investors panicked over the unfolding family scandal.

Inside the sprawling Sterling mansion, the atmosphere was thick with gloom. Anton had barely spoken in three days. He sat in his massive leather armchair in the private study, staring blankly into the unlit fireplace, completely shattered by the betrayal of the woman who had raised him.

I walked softly across the Persian rug, carrying a tray with a warm cup of chamomile tea, and set it gently on the side table beside him.

"Anton," I said softly, resting my hand on his shoulder. "You need to eat something. You haven't slept properly since the wedding."

Anton looked up at me, his eyes red-rimmed and filled with a profound, aching sorrow.

"How could she do it, Clara?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "How could my own mother try to kill the woman I love on our wedding day? What kind of monster have I lived with my entire life?"

I knelt down beside his chair, taking his cold hands in mine. I didn't offer toxic positivity or fake platitudes. I gave him the hard, grounding truth he desperately needed.

"Your mother built an empire on control, Anton," I said, looking deeply into his eyes. "For her, nobody was ever good enough for her golden boy. Every woman you ever cared about was a threat to her throne. She didn't just try to hurt me—she tried to maintain absolute dominion over your life. But that reign is over."

Anton let out a ragged breath, leaning his forehead against mine. A single tear slipped down his cheek.

"I'm so sorry, Clara," he whispered. "I'm sorry I brought you into this toxic mess. If you want a divorce... if you want to walk away from all of this right now, I wouldn't blame you."

I pulled back slightly, giving him a fierce, unwavering smile, and cupped his face in my hands.

"I didn't marry your mother, Anton. I married you," I said firmly. "And I don't run away from a fight. We are going to clean house, take full control of the family board, and build a new life—together. Just you and me."

For the first time in days, a faint spark of genuine warmth returned to Anton’s eyes. He wrapped his arms tightly around me, burying his face in my neck, holding onto me like a drowning man clutching a lifeline.
