Chapter 4 - The Whispers in the Shadows

By midnight, the flashing blue lights of the ambulance had illuminated the grand entrance of the Grand Azure Hotel, casting eerie azure shadows across the marble lobby.

Anton had ridden in the back of the ambulance alongside the paramedics, his face pale and drawn with shock. Before leaving, he had begged me to stay behind, manage the remaining guests, and wrap up the hotel settlement.

"I'm so sorry, Clara," he had choked out, holding my hands tightly outside the sliding glass doors. "Our wedding night... ruined because my mother suddenly collapsed. I don't understand what happened to her. The doctors think it might have been an extreme neurological reaction or an accidental overdose of some heavy medication she was taking."

I had looked up at him with pools of manufactured tears glistening in my eyes, squeezing his hands back with practiced tenderness.

"Don't worry about me, my love," I had whispered, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "Go take care of your mother. That is where you belong right now. I will handle everything here. Just keep me updated."

Now, standing alone in the grand bridal suite on the top floor of the hotel, the silence of the room felt deafening.

The heavy floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the glittering city skyline below. I walked over to the king-sized bed, strewn with rose petals and ivory satin sheets, and slowly unzipped my heavy wedding gown, letting it pool around my ankles like a discarded suit of armor.

I walked into the adjoining marble bathroom, turned on the oversized rainfall shower, and stared at my reflection in the fogged-up vanity mirror.

My reflection looked calm. Collected. Triumphant.

But I knew the war was far from over. Doña Carmela was currently at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, surrounded by top-tier specialists. The moment her stomach was pumped and the toxicology screen came back, the doctors—and eventually Anton—would discover the exact chemical composition of the substance she had slipped into my glass.

When Anton found out that his mother had attempted to poison his bride on their wedding day, his entire world would shatter. And Doña Carmela, desperate to save face and deflect blame, would undoubtedly launch a vicious counter-attack. She would lie, manipulate, and try to frame me for possessing the drug.

Tick-tock.

I needed to secure the ultimate insurance policy before morning.

I grabbed my designer leather handbag from the velvet bench, unzipped the hidden inner pocket, and pulled out a small, clear plastic evidence bag. Inside sat a pristine, unbroken glass dropper vial with a gold-plated cap—the exact spare vial I had managed to snatch from Doña Carmela’s designer vanity during our pre-wedding dinner rehearsal three days ago, when I first discovered her suspicious medical shipments arriving at the family estate.

I had known she was planning something. I just didn't know she would be arrogant enough to execute it in front of three hundred witnesses.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed violently on the marble counter.

The caller ID flashed: ANTON ❤️.

May you like

I took a deep, steadying breath, tapped the green accept button, and forced a soft, trembling tremor into my voice before bringing the phone to my ear.

"Anton? Oh, thank God. How is she? Is Mama going to be alright?"
