Chapter 7 - The Masterclass in Manipulation

"Detective Vance, Anton," I began, my voice trembling with carefully calibrated fragility. "I didn't want to bring this up because it sounds petty, especially on our wedding day... but I suppose I have no choice now."
Anton frowned, squeezing my hand tighter. "What are you talking about, Clara? What didn't you want to bring up?"
I lowered my eyes, biting my lower lip as if struggling to find the courage to speak.
"Yesterday afternoon, right before the ceremony, I walked into the bridal prep room to grab my touch-up powder," I whispered, pitching my voice to sound completely honest and distressed. "I overheard... I overheard Mama Carmela talking on the phone."
Detective Vance leaned forward instantly, his pen poised over his notebook. "What did she say, Mrs. Sterling?"
"She was talking to someone—I couldn't hear who—and she sounded furious," I continued, letting a tear slip down my cheek with absolute precision. "She said, 'The ungrateful little gold-digger is marrying my son today, but she won't see the sunrise tomorrow. I’ve added a special little touch to her champagne flute so she’ll embarrass herself right in front of the entire guest list.'"
Anton froze. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost.
"No," Anton whispered, shaking his head violently in sheer denial. "No way. My mother would never... she wouldn't try to hurt you, Clara! You must have misunderstood!"
"I wish I had misunderstood, Anton!" I cried softly, letting my voice break with emotional exhaustion. "When we sat down at the high table, I noticed Mama Carmela staring at my glass the entire evening with this... this terrifying look in her eyes. When the Best Man gave the toast, and you turned to look at the photographer like I asked... I looked down at my drink."
I paused, letting the heavy silence build in the room.
"I smelled something strange—a bitter, chemical scent," I whispered, looking straight into Detective Vance’s eyes. "I remembered what I heard her say in the prep room. I was terrified. I didn't want to drink poison, Detective. So in a blind panic, when you both looked away for two seconds, I switched my glass with the one sitting right beside mine—which belonged to Mama Carmela."
Detective Vance stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, weighing every word, analyzing every micro-expression on my face.
"So, you're saying," the detective said slowly, "that you knew the drink in front of you was tampered with, you swapped it with your mother-in-law's glass, and she ended up drinking her own poison?"
"I didn't know she was the one who put it there for sure until she drank it and collapsed," I replied, my voice steady and unyielding. "I just knew I didn't want to die. If saving my own life means she accidentally consumed the substance she prepared... then call me whatever you want, Detective. But I am the victim here."
Anton sat completely motionless, staring at the floor, his entire reality crumbling around him. The mother he idolized had tried to poison his bride. And his bride, fighting for her survival, had unwittingly turned the tables on her attacker.
Detective Vance closed his leather notebook with a sharp snap.

"We will be pulling the security footage from the bridal prep hallway yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Sterling," the detective said, his tone professional and neutral. "If audio or video corroborates your statement regarding Doña Carmela’s statements in the hallway, this investigation will take a very different turn."
"Please do, Detective," I replied, offering him a calm, resolute nod. "I have nothing to hide."
