Chapter 3 - The Unraveling at Table One

The music swelled as the lead singer of the band launched into a lively jazz number, but the noise felt miles away to Doña Carmela.

Her breath was coming in shallow, rapid hitches. The heavy pendant of her diamond necklace rose and fell violently against her collarbone. She tried to lift her crystal water glass again, but her fingers refused to cooperate. Her right hand gave a sudden, uncontrollable spasm, sending the water glass tipping over. The ice-cold liquid spilled in a wide, shimmering puddle across the pristine white tablecloth, soaking the hem of her expensive designer jacket.

"Mother!" Anton gasped, jumping to his feet, instantly dropping his napkin. "Good God, what is happening to you? Your hands are shaking uncontrollably!"

"I... I need..." Doña Carmela stammered, her tongue feeling thick and sluggish in her mouth. The potent paralyzing drops were rapidly working their way through her central nervous system, freezing her fine motor skills and locking up her vocal cords. "Anton... get me... out of here..."

Within seconds, the commotion at our VIP table drew the attention of nearby guests. Heads turned. Whispers rippled through the rows of tables like wind through dry grass. The society gossips, always hungry for scandal, leaned in with wide eyes and clicking cameras on their phones.

"What's going on with Doña Carmela?" murmured someone from table four. "Did she collapse? Is she having a stroke?"

"Look at her face—she looks terrified!" another voice hissed.

My heart pounded, but I kept my external expression a mask of pure, angelic panic. I stood up quickly, rushing to her side and grabbing her other arm to steady her before she slumped entirely out of her chair.

"Oh, my goodness! Someone please help us!" I cried out, projecting my voice so the entire ballroom could hear the distress of a loving, devoted bride. "Mama Carmela is having a medical emergency! Call an ambulance right now!"

"No... no hospital..." Doña Carmela managed to wheeze out, her fingers digging into my forearm with terrifying, desperate strength. She glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred. She knew. She knew I had beaten her at her own game. But she couldn't accuse me without exposing her own premeditated attempted murder. If she said, "She swapped our glasses and made me drink my own poison!" she would have to explain what was in that poison in front of three hundred witnesses and half the city’s police force.

She was trapped in a cage of her own making, and the door was firmly bolted from the outside.

"Mother, you can't breathe properly! You're completely stiff!" Anton yelled, his voice cracking with panic as he tried to lift her out of the chair. "Julian! Get the hotel manager! Call 911 immediately!"

As chaos erupted around our table, with hotel staff rushing over with smelling salts and paramedics being paged over the PA system, I felt a cold surge of absolute power. This was just the beginning. Doña Carmela had spent years building a kingdom of fear, intimidation, and quiet cruelty behind closed doors.

Tonight, her empire of lies was going to crumble right in front of the entire city.

"Stay calm, sweetheart, I'm right here," I whispered softly into her ear as I leaned down to support her deadweight frame. I made sure my face was buried against her shoulder so no one could see the cold, hard smile playing on my lips. "Remember what I said, Mama? Family is everything. And I will always protect my husband from monsters... even the ones who gave birth to him."

Her eyes rolled back slightly as the sedative fully took hold, her body sagging heavily against Anton’s arms as he hoisted her up to carry her out through the private service exit.

The ballroom erupted into a frenzy of camera flashes, gasps, and frantic whispers. Our wedding reception was no longer a fairy tale celebration of love. It had transformed into the biggest, most explosive high-society scandal of the decade.

And I was standing right at the center of the storm, completely untouched, holding all the cards.
