Chapter 12 - The Gathering Storm

The legal battle escalated faster than we anticipated. Brenda had somehow managed to liquidate a portion of her hidden assets—money Marcus had funneled into offshore accounts before his arrest—to hire a ruthless family law attorney known for dragging out high-conflict divorces and inheritance disputes. Even though Calder and I were happily married, Brenda’s legal team was trying to exploit a legal loophole concerning corporate family trusts established by Calder’s late grandfather.

Tessa stormed into our house on a freezing Tuesday morning, slamming the front door shut and kicking off her snow boots with an audible huff. She dropped a thick stack of printed emails onto the kitchen island where I was prepping lunch.

"Look at this garbage," Tessa fumed, pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor. "Brenda’s lawyer subpoenaed my personal bank records, trying to prove that Calder gave me financial assistance during the holidays. She’s claiming that we conspired to hide family funds from the estate."

I picked up the papers, scanning the legal jargon. "That’s a blatant violation of privacy. You weren't even part of the business audit!"

"Exactly," Tessa said, stopping her pacing and crossing her arms. "She’s throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. But here’s the kicker—while digging into her legal filings, my firm’s compliance officer noticed something very interesting. Brenda didn't just fund this lawsuit with her own savings. She used funds from the *Calder Senior Memorial Foundation*, a registered non-profit charity."

My eyes widened. "Embezzlement from a charity? Is she insane?"

"She’s arrogant," a voice interrupted from the doorway. Calder walked in, having just finished a conference call with our legal team. His expression was grim, but his eyes burned with fierce determination. "My grandfather’s foundation was her pet project for decades. She always treated it like her personal piggy bank, but she was careful—or so we thought. If she used charity funds to finance a private, malicious lawsuit against her own son, she’s crossed a line that even her expensive lawyers can't defend."

"Can we prove it?" I asked, holding my breath.

Calder pulled a flash drive from his pocket and set it gently on the counter. "Tessa’s forensic contact managed to pull the wire transfer logs from the foundation’s operating account. The money went straight to the retainer fee for Brenda’s attorney last Thursday. Not only is this civil harassment now, but it’s also federal wire fraud."

The room fell silent. The weight of what this meant hung heavily in the air. Brenda wasn't just trying to make our lives difficult anymore; she had signed her own legal death warrant.
