Chapter 25 - The Digital Weapon

Ten minutes later, we were parked in a secluded rest stop overlooking the dark expanse of Puget Sound. Inside the cab of the truck, the only light came from the soft, flickering glow of Calder’s laptop screen as the downloaded flash drive contents decrypted onto the desktop.
"Look at this," Tessa whispered, leaning over the center console, her eyes wide as she read through the financial spreadsheets. "It’s not just Eleanor. It’s a complete syndicate network involving three sitting state judges, a dozen corporate shell companies, and Vanguard Asset Partners."
I pointed to a specific transaction highlighted in red near the bottom of the encrypted ledger. "There it is. The transfer order for our house. It was signed by Arthur Vance yesterday morning, using a forged power-of-attorney stamp that Eleanor stole from the federal evidence lockup while Brenda’s trial was still in its final week."
Calder sat back in the driver’s seat, staring out the windshield at the dark, restless water. The adrenaline was slowly fading, leaving behind the hardened, calculated focus of a man who had been pushed past every human limit.
"They thought they could break us with paperwork," Calder said quietly, a grim, dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips. "They thought we were still the terrified, broken family they could crush under their heels whenever they wanted a new vacation home."
"What’s our next move?" I asked, turning to look at him, my hand resting gently on his arm. "If we go to the local police, half the precinct is compromised by these judges."
"We don't go to the local police," Tessa answered, pulling her phone from her coat pocket. "We go straight to the federal prosecutor handling Brenda’s case. U.S. Attorney Harrison. He’s been looking for the missing tier of the syndicate for six months. This flash drive doesn't just clear our house—it gives him the jurisdiction to seize Eleanor’s entire personal fortune and issue an immediate arrest warrant for conspiracy and obstruction of justice."

Calder nodded slowly. He ejected the flash drive, slipped it into his breast pocket, and turned the ignition key. The engine purred to life, cutting through the silence of the night.
"Let’s go end this," Calder said.
