Chapter 6 - Operation Santa

With the dark cloud of legal doom finally lifted from our heads, a new, immediate reality set in: December had arrived, and our actual bank account was still severely depleted. We had no money for lavish gifts, no extra cash for expensive holiday outings, and the emotional scars of the Black Friday raid still hung heavy over our living room.

Hazel kept looking at the bare fireplace mantel. "Mommy, where are the stockings?" she asked one morning while sipping her milk.

My heart ached. I couldn't let Corrine win. I couldn't let the memory of that toxic morning be the only thing my daughter remembered about Christmas.

That afternoon, while Hazel was napping, I went down to the basement. Buried beneath boxes of old clothes, I found a bag of scrap fabric, some leftover yarn, and my mother’s vintage sewing machine. I might not have had money to buy fancy boutique stockings, but I had hands, and I had determination.

For three days, while Calder worked extra shifts and handled household chores without complaint, I sat at the dining room table sewing. I made three brand-new stockings out of thick green felt, trimming them with cozy white faux fur and hand-embroidering red snowflakes across the front.

When Hazel woke up on Saturday morning and saw the new stockings hanging proudly on the mantel—bigger, brighter, and made with love—she clapped her little hands and squealed with delight.

"Look, Mommy! Santa's stockings came back!"

Tessa came over that afternoon, carrying two massive boxes of homemade holiday decorations, pinecones, and twinkling fairy lights she had gathered from her own attic.

"Operation Santa is in full effect," Tessa declared, handing me a glue gun.

Together, we turned the house into a winter wonderland using homemade salt-dough ornaments, popcorn garlands, and paper snowflakes. It didn't cost more than fifteen dollars total, but our living room radiated warmth, joy, and resilience.

Meanwhile, Calder was taking massive strides to rebuild his life. He handed over complete control of all bank accounts, credit cards, and financial portals to me. He began attending individual therapy to address his deep-seated codependency issues with his mother. And every evening, he came home, wrapped his arms around my swelling belly, and spoke softly to our unborn son, promising to be the father we deserved.
