Chapter 29 - The Gathering of Light

Standing on the porch wasn't a federal marshal or a corporate lawyer. It was my sister, Chloe, holding a bouquet of fresh spring tulips and smiling ear to ear, flanked by her husband and their young son.

"Delivery for the strongest family in Seattle," Chloe announced brightly, stepping inside and wrapping me in a warm, tearful hug. "I brought cinnamon rolls. The real kind, with extra frosting."

"Come on in," I laughed, leading everyone into the kitchen as Calder took the bakery box. "Coffee is freshly brewed and ready."

As we gathered around the large kitchen island, watching Calder pour coffee while Hazel proudly showed her cousin her new coloring book, the atmosphere was filled with the warm, chaotic joy of a real family—unbroken, unburdened, and completely free.

Tessa leaned against the counter beside me, sipping her coffee with a contented sigh. "So, I heard through the legal grapevine that Eleanor’s arraignment is set for Monday. With the federal conspiracy charges and the seized offshore assets, her defense team has already resigned. She’s looking at a very long time behind bars."

I nodded slowly, feeling a profound, unshakeable sense of closure. "She chose her path," I said quietly. "We chose ours."

Just then, Calder walked over, setting a fresh cup of coffee down in front of me before wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder, just as he had done on Christmas Eve in our darkest hour.

He kissed my cheek softly, his eyes shining with deep, unshakeable peace. "What are you thinking about, Maeve?"

I looked out the window at the bright blue spring sky, at our laughing daughter playing safely on the grass, and at the strong, loving man holding me tight. We had stared down the darkest abyss, survived betrayal, financial ruin, and physical danger, and we had come out invincible.

"I'm thinking," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, "that spring looks beautiful on us."

Calder smiled, turning me around to press his lips gently to mine.
