Chapter 17 - The Siege

The warning wasn’t an empty threat. By Wednesday morning, the illusion of safety we had fought so hard to build was shattered once again.

Calder had left early for his office, but minutes after his departure, my phone began buzzing incessantly. Notification after notification flashed across my screen: unauthorized access alerts from our bank, corporate security alerts regarding our home mortgage, and an email from Calder’s new employer stating that their corporate network had experienced a massive, targeted cyberattack directly aimed at Calder’s employee files.

I rushed to the living room, grabbing Hazel’s hand and scooping Leo into my arms just as the front doorbell rang. It wasn't a normal knock. It was a heavy, rhythmic, aggressive pounding that rattled the glass in the front windows.

"Mommy, I'm scared," Hazel whimpered, clinging tightly to my leg.

"It's okay, sweetie. Mommy’s right here," I said, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to sound brave. I hurried to the hallway closet, pulled out our emergency landline phone, and dialed 911, reporting an active trespasser and potential threat at our address.

Through the frosted glass of the front door, I saw two tall, heavily built men in dark suits standing on our porch. One of them didn't even bother knocking anymore; he kicked the base of the door with a heavy boot, the wood splintering slightly around the deadbolt.

"Open up, Mrs. Vance!" a harsh voice shouted through the door. "We know you're in there! Tell us where Calder hid the digital keys to the family trust, and nobody gets hurt!"

Panic threatened to paralyze me, but the memory of Black Friday—the moment I realized no one was going to save us unless we saved ourselves—flashed in my mind. I grabbed our portable safe from the office, threw the emergency documents inside, and hurried upstairs with the children, locking the heavy master bedroom door behind us.

Downstairs, I heard the sound of the front door crashing open. Heavy footsteps echoed through the downstairs hallway, smashing furniture and shouting our names.

I locked myself inside the master walk-in closet with Hazel and Leo, holding my hand over my daughter's mouth to keep her from crying out, while dialing Calder’s mobile number on speed dial.

"Calder!" I whispered fiercely the second he answered. "They're in the house! Men sent by Marcus’s associates! They're looking for the trust keys!"

"Get out of the house!" Calder roared through the phone, the sound of screeching tires audible in the background. "I'm two minutes away! I called the police! Hide!"

Before I could answer, the bedroom door upstairs splintered open with a deafening crash. Heavy footsteps marched across the hardwood floor directly toward the master suite.
