Chapter 20 - The Dawn of a New Era

Two weeks later, the spring sun shone brilliantly over Seattle, melting the last stubborn patches of winter frost and bathing our home in warm, golden light.

The front yard, once the site of terror and intimidation, was now quiet and peaceful. Hazel was out on the lawn with Calder, chasing a bright red soccer ball and laughing with the unburdened joy of a three-year-old who knew she was safe. Inside, I was sitting on the living room sofa, nursing Leo as he drifted off to sleep against my chest.

The doorbell rang, gentle and unhurried.

I set Leo down in his bassinet and walked to the front door, pulling it open. Standing on the porch wasn't a process server, a federal agent, or a threatening stranger. It was Tessa, holding a bouquet of fresh spring tulips and smiling ear to ear.

He kissed my cheek softly, his eyes shining with deep, unshakeable peace. "What are you thinking about, Maeve?"

I looked out the window at the bright blue spring sky, at our laughing daughter playing safely on the grass, and at the strong, loving man holding me tight. We had stared down the darkest abyss, survived betrayal, financial ruin, and physical danger, and we had come out invincible.

"I'm thinking," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, "that spring looks beautiful on us."

Calder smiled, turning me around to press his lips gently to mine.

Outside, the wind rustled the fresh green leaves of the trees, whispering of a future filled with endless light, untouched by the shadows of the past. But as Calder pulled me closer, a sharp, sudden knock echoed loudly against the front door—a knock that didn't sound like a welcome visitor, but like a summons.

Calder and I froze, exchanging a single, breathless glance as the front door handle slowly began to turn from the outside...
