Chapter 18 - The Rescue

The doorknob of the master walk-in closet rattled violently. I pulled Hazel closer against my chest, shielding Leo with my body, my heart hammering so loudly I was certain the men outside could hear it through the wood.

"I know you're in there, Maeve," a cold voice sneered from the bedroom. "You can't hide forever. Open the door, or we'll kick it in."

Before they could strike the door, the sharp, wailing sirens of multiple police cruisers echoed loudly down our street, cutting through the morning air with deafening intensity. Red and blue lights flashed wildly through the bedroom windows, painting the walls in frantic strokes of color.

Outside on the street, shouting voices rang out. "Police! Drop your weapons! Hands on your head!"

The heavy footsteps outside our closet door hesitated, then turned and bolted toward the master balcony. Within seconds, the sound of breaking glass and heavy thuds outside indicated that the intruders were fleeing down the back trellis into the yard.

The bedroom door was kicked open moments later, not by intruders, but by a heavily armed tactical police officer with his weapon drawn. "Seattle PD! Clear!"

"We're in here! In the closet!" I called out, my voice cracking with adrenaline and relief.

The officer lowered his weapon slightly as he saw me shielding the children. "Are you injured?"

"No. We're okay," I breathed, tears finally spilling down my cheeks.

Minutes later, Calder burst through the front door of the house, looking wildly around the ransacked living room before sprinting up the stairs. He threw himself into the master bedroom, dropping to his knees beside us and pulling Hazel, Leo, and me into a desperate, crushing embrace.

"Are you safe? Are they gone?" he gasped, his face pale with terror.

"The police scared them off," I whispered, burying my face in his shoulder. "Calder, they know where we live. They're not going to stop."

Calder pulled back, his expression no longer just determined—it was lethal. The gentle husband and father had vanished, replaced by a man who realized that the war for his family’s survival had entered its final, critical phase.

"They won't get the chance to come back," Calder said, his voice cold and resolute. "We're ending this tonight."
