Chapter 12 - Sophie’s Secret Plan

In Columbus, eight-year-old Sophie Parker was tired of the shouting, the tension, and the cold atmosphere of her home.
Ever since her secret phone call with her grandmother, Sophie had been hatching a plan. She knew her father had driven up to Michigan. She also knew that her mother was packing suitcases upstairs, whispering furiously on the phone about divorce lawyers and selling assets.
That evening, while Natalie was downstairs in the kitchen pouring herself another glass of wine, Sophie slipped into her parents' bedroom. On the nightstand sat her father’s forgotten leather iPad case.
Sophie knew her father’s passcode—it was her own birthday.
With shaking little fingers, she unlocked the tablet, opened the airline app, and checked flights from John Glenn Columbus International Airport to Traverse City, Michigan. There was a direct flight on Saturday morning.

She quickly memorized the flight details, slipped the iPad back onto the nightstand, and crept back to her room. She pulled her pink piggy bank out from under her bed, counted her saved allowance—$84.50 in coins and crumpled dollar bills—and smiled with fierce determination.
She was going to see her grandmother. And nothing was going to stop her.
