Chapter 15 - Spring in Harbor Springs

Spring arrived in northern Michigan with an explosion of emerald-green pines, blooming wildflowers, and the glittering, crystal-clear waters of Lake Michigan sparkling under a warm May sun.

My life in Harbor Springs had become a sanctuary of peace. Clara and I spent our afternoons walking along the pebble shoreline, and my volunteer work at the library brought me endless joy.

On a bright Saturday morning in late May, I was sitting on my front porch reading a book when a silver taxi pulled up to the curb.

The rear door opened, and a small figure in a pink jacket stepped out, clutching a worn-out teddy bear and a pink backpack.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Grandma!" Sophie cried out, dropping her teddy bear on the grass and running full speed up the wooden steps.

I dropped my book, stood up, and opened my arms just in time as my sweet granddaughter hurled herself into my embrace, burying her face in my shoulder and sobbing tears of pure joy.

"Oh, my sweet, darling girl," I wept, holding her tight, kissing her hair, and rocking back and forth on the porch. "What are you doing here? How did you get here?"

"Dad helped me," Sophie whispered, pulling back with a beaming smile as a second vehicle pulled up behind the taxi.

Jason stepped out of the driver's seat of a modest rental car, looking tired, humbled, but entirely transformed. He walked slowly up the steps, stopping a few feet away, looking at both of us with hopeful, moisture-rimmed eyes.
