Chapter 7 - The Lawyer in Harbor Springs

Up in Harbor Springs, Michigan, the world was blanketed in a pristine, quiet layer of white snow.
I was sitting in my cozy kitchen drinking chamomile tea when a gentle knock sounded at the front door. Opening it, I found Clara standing there alongside a distinguished-looking gentleman with silver hair and a warm smile.
"Evelyn, honey, this is Marcus Vance," Clara introduced. "He’s a retired estate attorney who moved up from Grand Rapids three years ago. I thought it was time you got your legal ducks in a completely watertight row."
Marcus stepped inside, shedding his coat with a friendly chuckle. "Good morning, Mrs. Parker. Your friend Clara tells me you've recently relocated and want to ensure your estate and current assets are fully protected from any outside interference."
Over the next two hours at Robert’s cherrywood desk, Marcus reviewed every account, every title, and every certificate of deposit. When I explained my situation with Jason and Natalie, Marcus listened with professional gravity, nodding slowly.
"You did the right thing by securing your funds immediately, Mrs. Parker," Marcus advised, his pen tapping thoughtfully against his legal pad. "Under Ohio and Michigan law, your accounts were solely in your name, meaning no one had legal claim to them. However, to ensure absolute protection—and to secure your granddaughter’s future without letting her parents touch a single cent—we should establish an irrevocable family trust."
"A trust?" I asked.
May you like
"Precisely," Marcus smiled. "A trust that protects your capital during your lifetime and designates your granddaughter as the sole beneficiary upon your passing, with strict trustee controls so that neither Jason nor Natalie can ever access the principal. Your money will be used exclusively for your peace of mind and Sophie’s education."
I signed the papers that very afternoon. As the ink dried, a profound weight lifted from my shoulders. Robert's legacy was safe. Sophie's future was secured.
