Chapter 13 - The Legal Revelation in Columbus

Back in the Columbus living room, Natalie confronted Jason the moment he returned from his trip to Michigan.

"Well?" Natalie demanded, standing in the foyer with her arms crossed. "Did you get her to agree? Did she wire the money to save the house?"

Jason walked past her without taking off his coat, his face expressionless. "No, Natalie. I didn't ask her for a dime."

Natalie let out a shriek of disbelief. "You drove six hours to Harbor Springs and you didn't ask her for money?! Have you lost your absolute mind?!"

"I went there to apologize," Jason said coldly, tossing a thick manila folder onto the coffee table. "And while I was gone, I finally decided to look into our joint finances, since you've been managing the household ledger for the past year."

Natalie froze, her eyes darting to the folder. "What... what is that?"

"That is a printout of your secret credit card debts," Jason said, his voice deadly quiet. "Thirty-four thousand dollars in hidden luxury boutique balances, unpaid spa memberships, and secret designer loans that you've been charging to accounts I didn't even know existed. You didn't just want my mother’s money for a kitchen, Natalie. You wanted it to bail you out of your own financial recklessness."

The color drained entirely from Natalie’s face. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The jig was finally, irrevocably up.
