Chapter 16 - Father’s Redemption

I stood up slowly, keeping one protective arm around Sophie, and looked at my son.

"Mom," Jason said softly, his voice trembling slightly. "I didn't come here to ask for money. I came here because Natalie and I are getting a divorce, the Columbus house is on the market, and I’ve resigned from my firm to take a quieter accounting job right here in northern Michigan."

I raised my eyebrows in surprise. "Northern Michigan?"

Jason nodded earnestly. "I rented a small, two-bedroom apartment in Petoskey, just twenty minutes down the road. I’m in weekly counseling, Mom. I’m learning how to stand on my own two feet, how to be a real father to Sophie, and how to undo the damage I caused."

He looked down at the wooden porch boards, swallowing hard. "I don't expect you to forgive me overnight. I know I threw you out. I know I chose greed over family. But... if you'll let me, I want to earn your trust back. Piece by piece. Day by day."

Sophie looked up at me, her big brown eyes filled with hope. "Please, Grandma? Dad is really different now. He doesn't yell anymore."

I looked at my son. I saw the humility in his posture, the genuine remorse in his eyes, and the honest effort he was putting forth. Forgiveness wasn't about condoning what he had done; it was about opening the door for healing.

"Well," I said, a gentle smile finally breaking across my face. "I suppose a cup of hot cocoa is in order for my favorite granddaughter. And perhaps... a very long conversation for you and me, Jason."
