Chapter 19 - Thanksgiving, One Year Later

Exactly one year to the day after the disaster in Columbus, November arrived with a biting chill and a brilliant blue sky.
Instead of a tense, hostile mansion filled with demands for luxury kitchen renovations, Thanksgiving dinner was hosted right here in Harbor Springs.
The smell of roasted turkey, sage dressing, and fresh apple pie filled my lakeside cottage. The dining table was set with Robert’s favorite porcelain plates, polished silverware, and a centerpiece of autumn leaves and pinecones.
Sophie, now nine years old and beaming with happiness, helped me pull the turkey out of the oven while Jason poured sparkling cider into our glasses.
"Alright, everyone," Jason announced with a wide, genuine smile, raising his glass as we all gathered around the table. "Before we eat, I want to propose a toast."
Sophie and I looked at him, smiling.
"One year ago today, I made the biggest mistake of my life," Jason said, his voice steady and filled with deep emotion. "I let pride, greed, and arrogance blind me to the most precious blessings I had. Mom, thank you for having the courage to walk away and teach me what real strength looks like. Thank you for forgiving me. And happy Thanksgiving, to the best family in the world."
"Happy Thanksgiving, Daddy," Sophie cheered, clinking her glass against his.

I raised my glass, looking out the massive picture window at the serene, majestic waves of Lake Michigan rolling gently onto the shore. My heart was full, peaceful, and completely at home.
Robert was right. Never let anyone make you feel small. And sometimes, losing everything you thought you needed is the only way to find everything you ever truly deserved.
