Chapter 14 - The Midnight Summit at Vance Manor

The iron gates of the Vance estate swung open automatically as Julian’s black Bentley glided up the winding driveway toward the sprawling Tudor-style mansion. Inside the vehicle, the air was thick with tension. Nora sat in the passenger seat, the manila envelope from Arthur Sterling resting heavily in her lap like a loaded weapon.
Julian parked the car in the underground garage, turned off the engine, and immediately reached over to cover her hands with his warm palms. "Sterling's confession changes the timeline, Nora," he said quietly, his gaze searching her face in the dim dashboard light. "With those certified government affidavits, we don't have to wait for the civil courts to drag this out for years. We can execute a total asset freeze by tomorrow morning. Every bank account, every trust fund, every brick the Kellers own will revert to your direct control."
Nora looked down at her hands, then turned her gaze toward the sprawling gardens outside. "And what happens to Marcus?"
"Marcus will face federal prosecution for industrial espionage and wire fraud," Julian said without a trace of hesitation. "He made his bed, Nora. He walked away from you in front of the entire world to protect his family's name. Now, that exact family name is going to be the anchor that drags him to the bottom of the legal ocean."
"I don't want to destroy him out of spite, Julian," Nora murmured, her voice laced with a complex exhaustion. "For three years, I let Marcus define my self-worth. I believed the lie that I was just a background player—a brilliant little ghost who drafted the dreams while men like him took the applause. When he raised his hand at the altar before the officiant could finish asking the question, it felt like the end of the world."
Julian cupped her cheek with one hand, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone. "It *was* the end of the world, Nora. The world where you settled for crumbs. But look at what rose from the ashes. You built an empire. You built *us*."
Before Nora could answer, her cell phone buzzed violently on the center console. The screen flashed with an unknown, restricted caller ID. Frowning, Nora picked it up and pressed accept.
"Nora Vale?" a weak, raspy voice whispered through the speaker. It sounded breathless, terrified, and horribly frail.

"Who is this?" Nora demanded, her posture stiffening.
"It’s... it’s Harrison Keller," the voice wheezed from the other end of the line. "I’m calling from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. The doctors say I have less than forty-eight hours. My son... Marcus is missing, and the federal agents are already at the gates. Please... before you sign the final papers to obliterate what’s left of our family... you need to come to the hospital. There is something about your mother’s final architectural contract—the one your father signed before he died—that you need to see with your own eyes."
