Chapter 19 - The Final Choice

Julian immediately stepped in front of Nora, his broad shoulders blocking Marcus's path like a stone wall, his hand resting instinctively near his jacket pocket where security panic buttons were wired directly to the building's central dispatch.

"You are trespassing, Marcus," Julian warned, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with suppressed fury. "If you take one more step into this penthouse, I won't just call the federal marshals. I’ll throw you over the balcony myself."

Marcus ignored Julian entirely, his wild, desperate eyes fixing solely on Nora over Julian's shoulder. Tears mixed with rainwater streamed down Marcus’s pale, haggard face. "Nora, please! Remember three years ago? Remember when we stood on the draft floor designing our first major project together? We loved each other once. You can't let them lock me away. Just... just drop the civil litigation. Sign the pardon papers. You have everything now—you have the empire, you have Vance, you have the world! Why do you still want to destroy what's left of me?"

Nora slowly stepped out from behind Julian. Her expression was completely devoid of anger, hatred, or even satisfaction. There was only a profound, crystal-clear emptiness—the look of a master architect surveying a demolished ruin that was finally ready to be cleared away for something better.

"I don't want to destroy you, Marcus," Nora said quietly, her voice cutting through the silent penthouse like a razor-sharp blade. "You destroyed yourself the moment you believed that stepping on someone else was the same thing as climbing to the top."

She walked closer, stopping just a few feet away from him, looking down at the man who had once held her entire world in his hands at 4:17 on a Tuesday afternoon.

"At 4:17 on my wedding day, when you raised your hand before the officiant could ask me to say 'I do,' you thought you were humiliating me," Nora continued steadily, her amber eyes locking onto his terrified gaze. "You thought you were breaking my spirit, locking me out of your privileged world, and leaving me with nothing."

May you like

Marcus trembled, unable to meet her gaze anymore.

"You were wrong," Nora whispered. "You didn't destroy me, Marcus. You set me free. And you reap the exact foundation you poured."
