Chapter 9 - Settle the Accounts

Six months later, the final pieces of the Keller Meridian fallout were settled quietly in a downtown federal courthouse.

Sloane Pierce had been forced to take a mid-level entry job at a suburban PR firm after her family’s remaining luxury assets were auctioned off to pay unpaid corporate taxes. Margaret Keller moved out of her grand Lake Forest mansion and into a small two-bedroom apartment in Indiana, completely cut off from the Chicago country clubs that had once defined her identity.

Grant Keller was prohibited by the SEC from serving as an officer or director of any publicly traded company for ten years. He settled in a quiet town outside Milwaukee, working as a junior estimator for an independent subcontractor—the very kind of working-class business he had once looked down upon with contempt.

Meanwhile, Vale Holdings announced its largest civic project in history: the Chicago Riverfront Green Initiative, a five-billion-dollar development project aimed at restoring historic industrial zones into public parks, affordable housing complexes, and tech incubators.

Nora Vale was officially named the Chief Executive Officer of Vale Development, taking full control of the family’s real estate and architectural investments.

On a bright autumn afternoon, Nora sat in her spacious new office on the top floor of the Vale Tower. Sunlight poured through the panoramic glass windows, illuminating blueprints of the new city layout spread across her vast white marble desk.

Her door opened softly, and Julian Vance walked in holding two hot coffees from her favorite small café down the street.

“Hard at work, CEO Vale?” Julian asked with a warm, easy smile, placing a cup on her desk.

“Just approving the final land permits for Phase One,” Nora replied, leaning back in her leather chair and stretching her arms. She looked vibrant, confident, and entirely at peace.

Julian walked behind her desk, resting his hand gently against the back of her chair. Over the past six months, their professional partnership had evolved into a deep, genuine romance built on mutual respect, shared intelligence, and absolute honesty. Julian had never asked Nora to diminish herself; instead, he stood beside her as an equal partner in every sense of the word.

“Your father mentioned that the board approved the international expansion plan into London,” Julian said softly, his fingers brushing gently against her shoulder.

Nora turned her head to look up at him, her eyes sparkling with warmth. “Yes. Which means we’ll be spending quite a bit of time traveling together.”

“I wouldn't have it any other way,” Julian smiled, leaning down to kiss her forehead gently.
