Chapter 8 - The Desperate Plea

The gala was in full swing when a commotion broke out near the private ground-floor entrance of the center.
Security guards in dark suits moved swiftly to block a man who was trying to push his way past the registration velvet ropes. The man was unkempt, his eyes wild, wearing a wrinkled suit that looked weeks old.
It was Grant Keller.
Nora noticed the disturbance from across the marble lobby and raised her hand, signaling her head of security to stand down momentarily. Julian Vance stood calmly by her side, his posture protective yet composed.
Grant pushed past the final barrier, his breathing heavy as he stared at Nora. The contrast between them was devastating: Nora stood beneath the crystal chandeliers, bathed in success, beauty, and true power, while Grant looked like a ghost haunting the edges of a world he no longer belonged to.
“Nora!” Grant shouted, his voice cracking with emotion. “Nora, please! Just five minutes! That’s all I’m asking for!”
The high-society guests turned, whispering among themselves, recognizing the disgraced former CEO whose company had liquidized just weeks prior.
Nora stepped forward, her expression serene and undisturbed. She stopped three feet away from him, flanked by her security detail.
“You shouldn't be here, Grant,” she said quietly, her voice echoing softly off the glass walls.
“Nora, I was wrong!” Grant pleaded, tears glistening in his bloodshot eyes. He looked ready to drop to his knees right on the marble floor. “Sloane was a mistake! She meant nothing to me! My mother forced me into that merger—she manipulated me! I’ve lost everything, Nora! The bank took the house. Keller Meridian is gone. I have nothing left!”
Nora looked at him without a trace of anger, pity, or malice. There was only absolute, pristine clarity.
“You didn't lose everything because of your mother, Grant,” Nora said, every word measured and calm. “You lost everything because you treated people like disposable leverage. You traded three years of genuine loyalty for a title and a temporary ego boost.”
“I still love you!” Grant choked out, taking a step closer, but a security guard immediately blocked his path. “I remember the winter you stayed by my bedside when I had pneumonia! I know who you really are, Nora!”
Nora shook her head gently. “No, Grant. You never knew who I was. You only loved the modest girl who made you feel powerful. The moment you realized I had my own strength, you tried to destroy me publicly.”
She took a slow, deep breath, letting go of the last ghost of her past.
“Nora Lane is gone, Grant. And Nora Vale owes you nothing.”
Nora turned her back on him, stepping back toward Julian Vance and her father, who had just stepped out of the private elevator.

“Take Mr. Keller outside,” Harrison Vale commanded the security team cold-bloodedly. “If he returns, press formal trespassing charges.”
Grant screamed her name one last time as security firmly escorted him out into the cold night air, the heavy bronze doors shutting firmly behind him, sealing him out of her life forever.
