Chapter 23 - The Digital Footprint

By noon, the atmosphere in the Vance Architectural Group office had transformed from a celebratory workspace into a high-stakes war room. Julian had called in their most trusted cybersecurity specialist, a brilliant, hoodie-wearing prodigy named Leo who could trace a digital footprint across the dark web faster than a bloodhound on a scent.
They sat around the central glass conference table, surrounded by holographic projections of financial transfers, encrypted messaging logs, and international flight manifests.
"Found him," Leo announced, tapping a key on his mechanical keyboard with a sharp *clack*. A map of Zurich, Switzerland, popped up on the central screen, zooming in on a high-security residential building near the Bahnhofstrasse. "David Sterling isn't living out of a suitcase. He’s set up a shell corporation under the name 'Aegis Structural Consulting,' and guess who his primary financial backer is?"
Nora leaned forward, resting her forearms on the glass. "Who?"
"Not Marcus Keller," Leo said, spinning his laptop around so they could see the corporate registry documents. "It’s a private equity firm called Meridian Capital. And Meridian Capital is entirely owned and operated by none other than Richard Vance."
Julian’s breath hitched. A dark, furious flush crept up his neck. "Richard Vance. My uncle."
The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Richard Vance—the estranged patriarch of the Vance family who had tried to disinherit Julian years ago—was the hidden hand behind the entire conspiracy. He hadn't just watched Marcus Keller try to destroy Nora; he had been bankrolling the sabotage from the shadows, hoping to crush both Julian and Nora in one fell swoop and absorb Vance Architectural Group into his own failing conglomerate.
"It all makes sense," Julian said, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "Uncle Richard lost billions in the real estate crash two years ago. He needed a massive, high-profile project to bail out his investors. If the Southbank project fails due to structural failure, the contract defaults automatically to Meridian Capital."
"He’s playing a very dangerous game," Nora said, her emerald eyes narrowing into lethal slits. She stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the glittering Manhattan skyline. The vulnerability she had felt an hour ago was entirely gone, replaced by the cold, calculating fury of an architect who realized her masterpiece was being threatened by vandals. "If Richard wants to play dirty, we won't just defend ourselves. We’re going to tear his entire empire down to the bare studs."
"How?" Julian asked, joining her by the window, his hand finding hers. Their fingers interlocked, skin against skin, forming an unbreakable circuit of shared resolve.
"We don't wait for Sterling to leak the altered calculations," Nora said, turning to face her husband with a fierce, confident smile. "We publicize the original blueprints ourselves. We go live on international television, expose Richard Vance’s financial collusion with Sterling, and prove that Vance Architectural Group caught the defect and corrected it before a single cubic yard of concrete was poured."
Julian stared at her for a moment, and then a slow, breathtaking grin spread across his face. "You want to preempt the blackmail by blowing up the bridge while the enemy is still standing on it?"
May you like
"Exactly," Nora said. "Let’s see how Richard’s investors react when they find out he’s been funneling corporate funds into an international extortion scheme."
