Chapter 18 - The Encounter in the Rain
Later that evening, a cold, steady autumn rain began to sheet down over the glittering concrete canyons of Manhattan. Nora stood on the private wrap-around balcony of her newly acquired penthouse suite, watching the endless sea of red taillights crawling across the bridges below. A glass of sparkling mineral water sat untouched on the glass table beside her.
The sliding glass door behind her clicked open, and footsteps padded softly across the hardwood floor. A heavy, cashmere coat draped gently over her shoulders, followed by Julian’s arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her back against his warm chest.
"You're going to catch a cold out here, architect," Julian murmured into her hair, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder.
"I'm just enjoying the view," Nora whispered, leaning back into his embrace. "For so long, I thought the city belonged to people like the Kellers—people who manipulated the rules, bought the judges, and discarded anyone who got in their way. Now... looking out at the skyline... I realize the city belongs to the people who actually know how to build it."
Suddenly, a sharp beep echoed from inside the penthouse—the private security monitor at the base of the elevator foyer. Julian frowned, stepping back slightly. "Stay here. Let me check the security feed."
Nora turned around, her instincts instantly on high alert. She followed Julian back into the brightly lit living room just as the private elevator doors parted with a soft ding.

Standing inside the elevator car, soaked to the bone, shivering, and looking utterly hollowed out, was Marcus Keller.
Marcus took a hesitant step forward, his expensive designer suit ruined by the rain, his eyes wild and desperate as they landed on Nora. "Nora... please," Marcus choked out, his voice cracking violently. "You have to listen to me. My father died this afternoon. The federal agents have frozen every personal account I own. I have nothing left. I'm completely ruined."
