Chapter 1 - The Fall from Grace

The freezing salt water of the Newport estate’s infinity pool did not just shock Marin Hargrove’s skin; it shattered the illusion of a life she had spent four years building. At seven months pregnant, her body was already heavy, the twenty-nine weeks of growing a life inside her a sacred, fragile miracle. When Callum, her husband of three years and the glittering golden boy of East Coast hospitality development, shoved her backward, he wasn't just ending a marital dispute. He was casting her aside like a discarded receipt to shield his twenty-nine-year-old mistress, Paige Renshaw.

As the silk maternity gown ballooned, trapping her thrashing legs in heavy, waterlogged folds, Marin’s mind raced through the betrayal. The $18 million Newport estate, the soaring glass-and-marble terrace, the glittering cocktail party filled with Rhode Island’s social elite—it all vanished behind a curtain of green-tinted chlorine and blinding terror.

My baby. Please, God, keep my baby safe.

The impact against the hard concrete edge of the pool wall sent a white-hot jolt of agony up her right shoulder. Water rushed into her lungs as she gasped instinctively, choking and gagging. Above the surface, the muffled sounds of the party grew distorted. She saw blurred shapes darting back and forth. No one jumped immediately. Callum didn't dive in. He stood frozen twenty feet away, clutching Paige to his chest as if Marin were the assailant and Paige the victim.

Then, a strong pair of arms caught her. Jude Barrett, their head of security, had plunged into the water fully clothed.

"I've got you, Mrs. Hargrove!" Jude’s voice cut sharply through the roaring in her ears. "Keep your eyes on me! We’re coming up!"

With a powerful stroke, Jude hauled her toward the shallow-end steps. Two catering employees rushed over, their faces pale with shock, pulling Marin out onto the marble deck. She collapsed against the stone, coughing violently, her body wracked with freezing shivers and a sickening, sharp contraction tightening low in her abdomen.

She pressed her trembling palms against her rounded belly.

"She's not moving," Marin whispered, her voice cracking into a desperate sob. "Jude... she was kicking just a minute ago. I can't feel her now."

Jude knelt beside her, water dripping from his broad shoulders, his professional composure masking a deep, simmering fury. "Call an ambulance! Now!" he barked at the caterers.

Across the terrace, Callum finally took a hesitant step forward, his custom navy suit soaked at the hem where Jude had splashed out. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a sudden, creeping realization of what he had just done. But before he could speak, Paige Renshaw seized his arm, her eyes wide with fabricated terror.

"Callum, you saw her!" Paige cried, her voice trembling with theatrical fragility. "She came at me like a madwoman! She tried to push me into the deep end! I thought she was going to drown me!"

Marin turned her head against the cold stone, disbelief paralyzing her vocal cords for a precious second. "You lying, manipulative bitch," she rasped, tasting chlorine and blood.

"Callum, look at her, she's completely unhinged!" Paige wailed, burying her face in Callum’s shoulder. "She needs help. Everyone saw how unstable she’s been lately."

Callum stopped. The remorse that had flickered in his eyes vanished, replaced by the convenient narrative Paige had spent weeks constructing. He looked down at Marin, not as a husband whose wife had nearly drowned, but as a liability.

"Marin," Callum said, his voice flat, rehearsed, and defensive. "You lost your temper. You shouldn't have cornered Paige."

"You... you pushed me," Marin whispered, the betrayal burning hotter than the freezing water. "You pushed your pregnant wife."

"I was separating you," he lied smoothly, sealing his complicity.

Sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the damp Newport air. Paramedics rushed through the wrought-iron gates with a stretcher, flashing lights casting eerie red and blue shadows across the marble columns. As they lifted Marin onto the gurney, wrapping her in emergency thermal blankets, Jude leaned down close to her ear, out of Callum and Paige's sight.

"Mrs. Hargrove," Jude murmured, his eyes hard. "The main pool camera was mysteriously disabled right before the party started."

Marin’s heart sank. "What?"

"But whoever shut it off missed the wide-angle security lens above the service entrance," Jude whispered, pressing a small, encrypted USB drive into her cold hand beneath the blanket. "And that camera caught everything Miss Renshaw did before your husband arrived. Hang on to your baby, ma'am. We’re going to prove the truth."
