Chapter 3 - The Alliance in the Shadows

Agent Vance listened intently as Marin laid out the entire timeline—from the initial discovery of the $600,000 embezzlement to Paige Renshaw’s meteoric rise within the company and the calculated campaign to paint Marin as mentally unstable.
"It's a textbook gaslighting operation," Vance noted, his pen scratching notes across a legal pad. "Callum Hargrove needs liquidity to keep his creditors at bay. His expansion into Martha's Vineyard failed, and his commercial leases in Providence are bleeding cash. To stay afloat, he’s looting escrow accounts and using corporate funds to finance Paige Renshaw’s lifestyle—and apparently, buying her silence on other matters."
"Other matters?" Marin echoed.
Vance paused, looking at her with a mixture of professional caution and deep sympathy. "Let's just say Miss Renshaw has a very interesting criminal record under a different last name in Massachusetts—one involving extortion and corporate blackmail. Callum thinks he’s manipulating her. In reality, she’s steering the ship toward the rocks."
Just then, Agent Vance’s phone buzzed on the bedside table. He glanced at the screen, his expression tightening. "That's your security chief, Jude Barrett. He encrypted the raw footage from the service entrance camera and uploaded it to our secure server."
"Can I see it?" Marin asked, sitting up against the pillows despite her aching muscles.
Vance connected his encrypted tablet to the hospital room's Wi-Fi, tapped a few keys, and turned the screen toward her.
The video timestamp read 7:14 PM—ten minutes before the incident by the pool. The camera angle overlooked the cobblestone service courtyard behind the Newport mansion. The frame showed Paige Renshaw standing by the catering van, speaking heatedly on her phone.
Her voice was picked up faintly by the high-gain external microphone: "I don't care how you do it, just make sure the board audit gets delayed until Monday. If Marin opens her mouth about the Bar Harbor funds tonight, Callum and I are ruined... Yes, I'll take care of her. Watch and learn."
On screen, Paige then turned toward a cart filled with empty glass bottles, deliberately picked up a heavy champagne flute, and smashed it against the brick wall. She picked up a jagged shard of glass, deliberately pressed it against her own forearm until a thin bead of blood appeared, and then smeared it across her sleeve before rushing toward the pool terrace to scream for Callum.
Marin watched the screen in stunned silence. The entire setup—the manufactured hysteria, the fake attack, Callum’s immediate, blind compliance—was laid bare in crystal-clear high definition.
"That's attempted assault, filing a false police report, and conspiracy to commit fraud," Vance said quietly. "Coupled with the financial records, we have more than enough to freeze Callum's personal and corporate assets. But there's a catch."
Marin looked at him. "What catch?"
"If we move in tonight, Callum will post bail within hours. He has high-priced defense attorneys on retainer who will try to paint this as a marital squabble gone wrong, and they will try to drag your mental health through the mud in family court to strip you of custody," Vance explained grimly. "If you want to protect your daughter and secure your financial future, we need to catch him in the act of transferring the remaining corporate reserves to an offshore account. And he’s scheduled to execute that final wire transfer at the corporate gala this coming Friday."
Marin stared at her reflection in the dark window pane. The frightened, helpless woman who had fallen into the pool was gone. In her place stood a mother fighting for survival.

"Friday night," Marin said softly. "At the Hargrove Annual Charity Gala. Everyone in New England high society will be there."
"Including federal prosecutors and state regulators," Vance smiled grimly. "Are you ready to play your cards, Mrs. Hargrove?"
